I've changed a gas water heater before, and I can confirm that you have to be a dumbass not to be real careful to do it right, especially if you live in the house!
I have changed several. Have yet to kill anybody.

The city I changed them in would have had me crucified if I killed someone with my work, the homeowner gets a pass.
