I don't see the contradiction. I can hear this from many people in my life and believe it to be a common issue while not applying it to every American and feeling hatred towards them (as the other user I was engaging with was suggesting)
The term most politically aware americans means >50% of the political aware American people. In its most loosely applied manner this could be less than 50% of all American people even making it a minority.
The meme implies that this is a behavior exhibited by all Americans, making it hyperbolic.
I could have given that person a more developed and honest response but I didn't feel it would be productive at all so I didn't bother wasting my energy.
