If you can smell a few backyard chickens the owners are doing something horribly wrong.

[-] SharkWeek 1 points 11 hours ago

Ah ok, yeah if you have a handful then I'm sure the smell is dissipated. I've only ever encountered chickens in quantities of 30 or more.

I had 160+ at one point and it didn't smell even if you were standing in the middle of the yard. They need space, that's all.

Maybe I'm just sensitive to the smell and you're not, then?

We're talking about 30-50 of them with about half an acre to roam. The smell turned my stomach every day in a way that no other farm smell ever has.

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted, your experience is valid.

50 on 1/2 acre is a lot, but shouldn't be stomach wrenchingly stinky. Grass certainly helps. Bare dirt would require more upkeep. My 160 were on like 2, and having that many was unintentional but like I said wasn't particularly smelly at all.

Sounds like chickens aren't for you, though. There's a nearby dairy I pass from time to time that smells really bad some days.
