I didn't know the two shows were similar. I'm a huge Doom Patrol fan, but Umbrella Academy has been on my "to watch" list for a long while.
Umbrella Academy was directly inspired by Doom Patrol. The original comic was created because the writer wanted to write Doom Patrol but couldn't get DC to sign onto his pitch, so he just made up his own universe to play in.
First season is very good. It goes downhill more every season after that. So if you get to a point where you aren't enjoying it just stop. It's doesn't recover.
