You never "do your own research". You trust the experts and listen to them.

Doing your own research involves trusting experts, but if the findings are easy to verify, like looking up number of open positions to students ratio, then it's a good idea to just check.

As anyone in science will tell you, doing research is basically 99.9% trusting experts, and 0.1% doing something new.
