I'm amazed at the number of people who need "break fast" explained to them. So many people use so many words without the slightest clue what they even mean.

I think "break fast" is one of those things you don't know until you do. You can know what a word means without guessing its etymology.

I never really thought about it because knowing people who worked night shifts still called it breakfast meant it was probably some holdover that didn't mean what it originally meant. When someone pointed that out in my 20s my first thought was "why would not eating while sleeping be considered fasting"?
