Hello Lemmy / FOSS / Hardware community!
I'm looking to buy a monitor arm. Any recommendations? Good brands?

  • I want it to have a spring
  • I'm prioritizing quality and durability

Context:
I have a monitor arm already and I love the concept. However, it's a 50 EUR (~=60 USD) "static" monitor arm and I want to upgrade this part. I know some monitor stands / monitor arms allow easy on-the-go adjustments of the height and angle. Which monitor arm to buy to have this feature? Recommendations? "Negative" recommendations (e.g. what not to buy)?

I have a single 6kg monitor + a notebook that can be left on it's static arm on the side.

I appreciate any feedback on this
Thanks!

Clamped to the table would be ideal, but if there are recommendations for a screwing mechanism [to the table] I'm interested to learn!

P.S. Had to think rapidly because I thought the vast majority of them are clamped. My current one is clamped

I have this dual monitor one at work and havent had any issues: (56€) https://euroelectronics.eu/products/2-fold-monitor-holder-with-gas-spring-desk-bracket-monitor-arm-monitor-stand-vesa-75x75-100x100-17-32-for-2-monitors

The build quality on mine is quite nice, with everything important made out of steel or aluminum and even some cable guides for a neat setup. Mine is a dual mount, but the company also has similar working single monitor mounts like these one:

47€ https://euroelectronics.eu/products/monitor-holder-13-27-8kg-black-maclean-mc-860

26€ https://euroelectronics.eu/products/uchwyt-biurkowy-do-monitora-uniwersalny-maclean-sprezyna-gazowa-17-35-12kg-vesa-75x75-100x100-mc-906

The second one seems to be all plastic but that doesnt necessarily make it bad. They all support 6kg or more.

Everything kind of depends on how you use it tho. These things usually dont use any bearings, so if you move them constantly (like multiple times daily), they will eventually wear out. Another thing to consider is the depth of your table and the distance you want your monitor to be from your face. The range of movement is pretty decent on mine, but if you have a super deep table (like 1m) and attach the mount on the back, then it might still be too far back for you.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! Do you know if the outside rotational part is it adjustable on-the-go, or does it rather require loosening/tightening of the screws? I mean the part that makes the monitor "face up" or "face down", e.g. here on the picture: https://euroelectronics.eu/cdn/shop/products/hqdefault_fec2e11e-701b-4ddd-a4ec-ba21e0bdab07.jpg?v=1587381905&width=1800

(It seems to require loosening/tightening, but want to confirm.)

I can not attest to the MC-860 that your image seems to be from, because i only have the MC-812. The mechanism on the MC-860 seems a lot more flimsy to me than mine tbh.

As the price difference isnt huge, i would personally recommend going with the dual version MC-812 and just removing one of the arms (you can just pull these out of the socket on this thingy). That way you can also add another display later if you ever need it. You can also just rotate this 90° so it points forward, if you have symmetry OCD...

On mine i can rotate the display attachment part around all 3 axis just fine (unless i fully tighten the screws) and it still stays in place and doesnt move over time or anything like that. Idk if its really intended for that tho, so if you adjust it frequently, you will probably have to re tighten the screw from time to time or it might start to tilt forward just from gravity pulling it down.

It also has this fancy quick disconnect mechanism which is nice for attaching and detaching the display.

I also just found this one https://euroelectronics.eu/products/uchwyt-monitora-ze-sprezyna-gazowa-podwojne-mc-775
Another single arm version but with what seems like a more sturdy mechanism.

Thanks a lot for the valuable detailed response!

// If anything or for future readers, I've decided to go for Ergotron LX for now. I've decided to prefer mechanical springs over gas (supposedly, mechanical lasts longer). And even more importantly, I want specifically a string mechanism for the "upwards"/"downwards" tilting of the monitor. One where you'd have the spring itself, and would be able to adjust the spring force with an additional screw (mechanically, internally, it presses against one of the spring's ends if I get it correctly, so is quite straight-forward and durable). This way, the tension is the difference between the monitor's angular force and the spring's angular force, not just the monitor against tightened screws. I hope it'll provide for easier adjustments. Ergotron has it as part of its promise as well, so if that won't work very well, I'll feel it in my rights to return it. So for now I've settled for this.

I really appreciate the responses still! 💙

np :) I was idle waiting for stuff at work so i had time to spare for writing overly long comments.

Glad you found something that fits your needs. And also nice to share your pick for others ^^
