The mindset of businessmen is something truly wonderous to behold.

Back in the late '80s when viruses were becoming a Real Thing™, in one company I worked for one of the VPs of Sales went off on this long rant at a company meeting about viruses and how he'd been infected so many times and learned how to not get infected. Apparently half of his advice was nonsense and one of the techies calmly shot that stuff down. The following exchanged then happened:

VP: How many times have you been infected?

T: Never. I've never been infected by a computer virus.

You'd think at this point it would be argument over, right? The VP had already expressed that he'd been infected literally dozens of times, sometimes multiple times by the same virus because he was too stupid to clean all his disks. The techie guy had never been infected. Case closed. Listen to the techie, right?

Wrong.

Management was impressed by the VP's "extensive experience" and literally thought the techie's "lack of experience" in dealing with viral infections was a stroke against him. So corporate policy was expanded with anti-virus measures that were ineffective because a clueless VP with "lots of experience" (where "experience" was defined as "stupidly being infected dozens of times") trumped a technical staffer who was able to mysteriously remain virus-free.

So what you say here? Rings true. Oh so fucking true.
