You can never completely regulate the internet and it's absolutely pointless to try.

You can regulate your child on the internet though, which I also think is pointless to try but it's more effective than the government stepping in

You can never completely regulate what people print and distribute so there's no point regulating newspapers.

You can never completely regulate people broadcasting radio messages so it's pointless to have broadcast standards.

If I break FAA regulations on an AM broadcast they'll knock on my door in a few hours.

If I start spreading Nazi propaganda they'll trace the paper back to the source.

If I empty Grandma's bank account into Bitcoin. It's fucking gone and nobody is going to find me.

That's the difference the older generation doesn't seem to understand.

[-] leftytighty@slrpnk.net 11 points 6 days ago

The "younger generation" might be naive to think unwillingness to regulate is the same as inability to regulate.

I hope you realize Bitcoin isn't untraceable.

[-] Xhead@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

It's untraceable until you withdraw, which you can do in plenty of countries anonymously.

My point being that comparing the internet to other industries in regards to regulation isn't going to have the same behaviour.

That's not true either... Bitcoin scams are busted all the time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptocurrency_tracing

It's not unlike tracking down a pirate radio signal, someone has to care and invest the resources into it.

Piracy is a good example, they pop up and they get taken down. Child sex abuse material is the same. We regulate content on the Internet.

You're falling for some BS propaganda from huge tech companies that profit off user submitted content arguing that they can't possibly manage their platforms properly.

Nobody said shitting out your garbage opinion on every huge web platform is an inalienable right (ironic?). We can hold YouTube and Meta accountable for their platforms' content.

If I call a TV station and spew racism on air they'll still get a fine.

Bitcoin scams are busted all the time, because they don't understand how to use the correct process to stay anonymous.

If you wanna keep personally insulting me, go ahead but I'm not falling for "BS propaganda" I'm talking from experience. If you use the right tools the only way you will ever get caught with Bitcoin is when you make a withdrawal.

Tracing Bitcoin is possible I admit but tying it to a person is impossible until you go to pick up.

As for the original topic on regulation, I'll stand my ground. You can try to regulate but they internet will always find a work around. Always has, always will.

If your just talking about YouTube and Meta than our ideas of the internet is very, very different. The internet isn't tied to big corperations like you think, those are just the ISPs the majority uses.

Just to be clear here:

  1. We're all too old to understand anything. BUT...
  2. You're speaking from far more tech experience than any of us have.

Yeah. Sounds reasonable.

But if a billionaire meddles with their social media platform's algorithm is such a way, that it boosts whatever will help them get more tax breaks, we should just lay back and enjoy it. Free speech baby!

[-] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 days ago

You can never completely regulate the internet...

True enough.

...and it’s absolutely pointless to try.

Um, no. Absolutely worthwhile to establish a reasonable non-destructive internet. Bad players will always find ways - they always have - but they can and should be relegated to the fringes where they have to work to have their voices heard, not be amplified by the biggest platforms in existence.

[-] Xhead@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

And what happens when the wrong people get in power and use that regulation to their advantage to prevent their opposition from being heard?

That's how you end up with Fascism

Maybe we should focus on educating the population to be aware of the danger so they don't fall for it instead of just throwing pointless policy at it

[-] villasv@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

That’s how you end up with Fascism

It really wasn’t how we ended up with fascism in the actual instance of fascism so…
