Many people have made the point that towns embedded into a rural landscape have better scaling for infrastructure and transport distances in the tail end of the fossil age than large cities. Arguably we're already seeing some first egress waves into the surrounding countryside, though for the wrong reasons, since mostly driven by remote work which depends on a high technology level.
