I actually like that they tone down on Planeswalkers. Once there were five, one in every color, then they printed one million and I don't even know most anymore. Also they printed like 20 different versions of some, so if I say I play Ajani, you have no idea what card I am playing because there are 25 with similar effects.
Also I like this Planeswalkers, really love the synergy it has. Only thing I dislike is the combination of tokens and counters.
I think I'm happy with 1-3 planeswalkers per set. Honestly, it would be neat if we got a few more local, one-off Planeswalkers that come from the planes we're visiting. Lately it's just been a lot of the same old crew.
Planeswalkers are fun, because they can accrue a lot of value but are vulnerable to damage and attacks. They are typically must-answer bombs because they can accrue value turn after turn, and they often help support a deck archetype/synergy. As long as there are enough answers in the format for them, I think they're fine.
One planeswalker is really fun to play against and to play with. It's fun on either side of the board and brings a lot of decisions. But facing a whole board full of superfriends is oppressive.
This change really only fixes that problem in limited where it wasn't a significant issue anyways, and standard in 2 years I guess, but there'll still be 9-12 PWs to stuff into a deck for anyone that wants to do that. For every other format, unless they systematically banned most Planeswalkers, the cows are out of the barn, there.
Standard is three years now 😭
Standard now will have more cards than Extended had when that first started.
Hah, yeah. It's gonna take a bit to get used to that.
