I guess we're both the "other people"
My brain is interpreting it as using that machine feels like you're using the machine gun. Normal people see you just using exercise equipment but OP imagines they're operating a mounted gun.
Yeah, that was what I was going for.

I think waiting for the machine to be open so you take it over before someone else does.
But then OP would be the gunner, not see the gunner.
I think OP is saying that no-one uses that machine unless they are waiting for something else
