I’ve never done makeup before, even my own, but I’d like to start learning. The sheer amount of options is a bit overwhelming though. What are your favorite tutorials (YouTube videos or channels, etc) for makeup, especially the basics?

Sorry I'm late to this thread - I haven't been online as much recently. But makeup is one of my favorite things!

If you want simple basic makeup for everyday wear, try Angela Bright. She's great about explaining exactly what she's doing, which products and brushes she's using, and lately she's in kind of a neutral, simple makeup phase, so her looks are pretty approachable.

For simple makeup, people also seem to like Jen Phelps and Hannah Louise Poston.

And then if you're feeling adventurous and want to try colorful fun makeup, try Angelica Nyqvist. I really love her tutorials and even if you're not so into bold colorful looks, her techniques are still useful to apply to more simple neutral looks.

These are all white women, which is helpful for me because I'm Casper the Ghost pale. But if your skin is deeper in tone, their techniques might not show up so well on your skin. Here are some channels by women of color that I see mentioned pretty often. I can't vouch for them because I haven't tried them, but maybe you'll find them helpful.

Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.

Rules…

  1. Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
  2. Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
  3. Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
  4. No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
  5. New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.
