It's actually from earlier than that (Locke, Smith later, yes), but it only became unmanageable after we found cheap energy in the industrial revolution, which made the human element mostly trivial.

Smith wrote in the 18th century. Locke, as I recall, never did much with economics

Locke "invented" liberalism, which Smith, as a moral philosopher, concretized in practice.

Yes but Loke solely focused on political rights whereas Adams was concerned with the economy. Locke wasn't involved in capitalism.
