The last of YaST? Blog post
(lwn.net)
openSUSE is an open, free and secure operating system for PC, laptops, servers and ARM devices. Managing your emails, browsing the web, watching online streams, playing games, serving websites or doing office work never felt this empowering. And best part? It's not only backed by one of the leaders in open source industry, but also driven by lively community.
YaST is still THE reason to use opensuse. It should be rewritten if its so cumbersome to maintain. Retiring YaST is pretty much equal to retiring opensuse. I hope it finds maintainers, and I hope that the backlash is so large that they reconsider.
Eh, I honestly don't use YaST very often. I'm going to try out Cockpit and see if it can replace YaST for me.
YaST used to be the reason to use openSUSE, but that has changed for me, and now the reasons are:
I don't need openSUSE to have some killer feature, I just need it to be solid. So if cockpit is a good replacement, I'm all for it.
But it's being replaced by a modern, standardized tool that will even allow you to YaST-out your system remotely. I say this is a win!
