There is a balance to be struck between texture that provides a useful and atmospheric view of the game world, and one that bores the players.

I have a really hard time getting the proportions right.

When I initially describe a scene, I typically try to include a couple of senses (smell, sight, texture) and provide a general framework for exploration.
