I think the US really deserves it. But what you suggest would just lower the standards of Europe to that of the US. And that's not something we should do because then we wouldn't really be any better.

Depends. If these US officials were responsible for US border policy or had significant political influence and would support current immigration policy, that would be 100% appropriate thing to do.

Taking politicians hostage is close to a war deceleration.

[-] FelixCress@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

How are politicians different to ordinary people?

Ok there's a few things that need to be more clear in this discussion before one should answer:

  1. Ireland is not part of the EU
  2. Taking US officials hostage because the US jails their own citizen is very different than some sort of exchange negotiation
  3. The US is still "somewhat" working together with other countries to not just jail tourists for being "immigrants"

With all these things in mind, I don't see why the EU should be doing any punishing. And even if Ireland or the UK wants to do something, it's debatable whether she should be protected under the laws of Ireland and the UK.

If the EU is going to do any punishing to protect everybody from the US, it will be in the form of requests and demands, after which it will be sanctions. Look at the sanctions against Russia if you want to know how that looks.

Ireland is not part of the EU

Say what now???

Taking US officials hostage because the US jails their own citizen

Say what now???

The US is still "somewhat" working together with other countries to not just jail tourists for being "immigrants"

Say what now??? US detained recently number of EU and British tourists for no reason whatsoever:

Oh my bad, i thought it was Northern Ireland.

Besides that my other points still stand.

  • She's a US citizen.
  • EU / Germany tourists are being returned as they should be

I think we should not really try and start a war.

[-] FelixCress@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Kindly learn to read. Pretty please:

She's a US citizen

She is NOT a US citizen. She is EU citizen living in the USA on the green card, illegly detained as multiple other EU and British citizens.

EU / Germany tourists are being returned as they should be

No. EU and British citizens should not have been detained in the first place and should not have been jailed for weeks - and if USA carries on like that, EU should definitely answer in kind.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

I think greencard means resident. If its the step right before citizenship then you have all rights outside of voting and jury duty.

[-] FelixCress@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Like the right to be detained. And removed if some fascist fucker decides so.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

yeah all the rights we all live under now. don't forget being accused of terrorism because you say something they don't like. complain about tesla its a terrorism, mention his low poling and you better thats a terrorism.

[-] x00z@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

She is NOT a US citizen

Is that not what a valid green card means?

No. EU and British citizens should not have been detained in the first place and should not have been jailed for weeks - and if USA carries on like that, EU should definitely answer in kind.

You say no. But that is just the truth. They are not being dissapeared like others are.

It should not have been happening of course.

Whether the EU should "answer in kind" is just warmongering. Stop going instantly towards declaring something that looks like a war declaration. Instead condemn the US and its treatment of people, and make people liable for themselves when going there by warning them.

EDIT: Going to block you for harassment.

Is that not what a valid green card means?

No, it doesn't. 🤦

Stop going instantly towards declaring something that looks like a war declaration.

At no point I said such thing - I merely suggested EU should do what USA are already doing.

EDIT: Going to block you for harassment.

Edit: say what now???

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

And that's not something we should do because then we wouldn't really be any better.

Why do you need to be "better"? It sure as hell isn't helping EU citizens in America.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

yeah its like retaliating against a crying baby by crying loudly. Sorta funny but not really something you should do.
