Decentralization.

Quite a few of us joined Lemmy in the first place due to the problems a Central Authority caused on Reddit.

ahh, so each server has it own rules? and if one server goes down, other servers still up?

Severs can chose which other servers they federate with.

Severs each have their own admin. You think the admin on your server is an asshole? Pack up and take your community to another server.

Severs are each deployed in their own jurisdiction, making the federation more resilient to censorship.
