Dear Canadians,
Despite being fully taken over by morons, this soon-to-be US expat loves you.
I don't understand, will you be an American that temporarily lives and works in another country?
Or will you live and work in America temporarily?
In the latter case: why choose the us?
In the former case: Why only temporarily leave the US?
American Expat means leaving the USA. ”ExPat" means ex-patriot. Not the best word, but it's what people use.
"Expat" is what people from wealthy countries use because applying terms like "migrant" to themselves make them feel uncomfortable.
It's a subtle form of racism / classism.
Well, I didn't intend it as such. I'm the son of a Cuban immigrant and have no shame in that. I'm using the vernacular. Take your accusations elsewhere, please.
I didn't think you intended it as such, and am not "accusing" you of anything.
I was simply making an observational comment about how that word is commonly used in the west. You yourself said it's not the best word.
Plenty of vernacular expressions have their roots in racism and other inequality, and are used by media to support heirarchies and disguise inequality.
It doesn't hurt to be mindful of that or to question our unwitting reinforcement of these ideas. For example a few years ago we saw UK "expats" voting for brexit to keep out "migrants". A little more mindfulness might have meant a little less voting for leopards to eat faces.
It also "doesn't hurt" to take things as intended. And before you call me our for the same, know that this will be a merry-go-round if you do.
Yea expats are foreign workers that intend to return home after some time. While immigrants are looking to stay.
I still maintain that there is some ambiguity with "US expat" but I ain't no native speaker. So what do I know.
I will return home to my parents and family for visits. I have permission to work from mexico from my company. I may come back if the states get their shit together, but I'm tired of fighting for a lost cause.
