to add to what others have said: nitrogen is also stolen from lower leaves to fund new leaves. you can mildly supplement nitrogen to help offset this. very dilute fertilizer. a pinch of mild granular in a couple cups of water. anything like that. just don't overdo it. plants don't like sudden change. too much of anything is more than likely going to make them unhappy.
