You all need to just start making English an official language across the EU. Yeah I know that's very American imperialist of me to say, but most of you speak it already anyway and it would make travel and communication so much easier. It feels like you all are insisting on speaking different languages just to pretend you have unique cultures when let's be real, once you welcome McDonalds that ship has sailed.

Lol what? Because there's McDonalds in Italy they should stop speaking Italian? Sorry but that's a really closed mind and bordelline stupid take. My first langage is french and I would never chose english over it. It's part of my identity. Also, being billigual is really easy, for some reason only native english speaker seems to have difficulty with it... so either you're just a lazy as fuck, or just unable to learn a second language..

[-] Lemminary@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

There's some irony there in telling people it's easy to learn a second language and the stereotype of French people having the patience of a peanut for language learners. Lol

I'm not saying you're wrong I just thought it was funny.

[-] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Not sure about French, but in Quebec we love it when people want to learn french. My ex was an anglo and the accent when they speak french sounded crazy sexy to me lol.

[-] dustyData@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

It's not all the French, mostly just Parisians.

Yeah but how easy is it becoming bilingual? Or in the case of Europe, centivigintitrilingual?

The horrible implication by your previous comment's logic and this link is that Europe should drop all languages except Russian. Or, if only EU countries apply, everyone should speak German, as it's obviously the predominant language. Also, this link absolutely destroys your idea that “they aren't unique cultures”, there are at least 120+ distinct cultures in Europe, just by languages alone. This is like looking at Japan and thinking that they must be Americans because they eat KFC on Christmas.

[-] rational_lib@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

It's hard to see the downside of everyone speaking Russian or German when compared with the current situation, but English would be better because 1) It would require the fewest people to learn a new language (sort by total speakers in the link above) 2) would be best for communicating with visitors and 3) fuck Russia

With your points you could also argue that the US should switch to Spanish.

Nah, they should make it Phoenician most European languages are descended from it, Including English. The true universal language.

Well on that basis you lot should change your official language to Chinese, because there are 5x as many of them as you and you buy all your crap from there.

[-] rational_lib@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Obviously it's easy to assume that because China has the most people, Chinese must be the most common language. But when you look at total people who know a language (as first, second, etc.) the most spoken language in the world is...English, with about 400 million more speakers than Chinese.

Why not start yourself? English isn't the official language of the US either, the US is multilingual but in fact has no recorded official national language.

While as here in The Netherlands we officially consider English not to be a foreign language anymore as the quality and quantity of English speakers so so great, and it's getting to a level where people are considering to making it an extra official national language.

But what's the point of making it official? If everyone already speaks English, next to their native language(s), it's already good right? It's mostly used for international business, we all have the same currency already, open borders, etc. We all use the metric system, just like the rest of the world (except for the US and a handful of tiny islands).

Here in The Netherlands we teach English, French and German in all primary and high schools next to Dutch, while we have 2 official national languages (Dutch and Frisian). How many languages do they teach in US schools as a basic curriculum?

Knowing more languages gives opportunities, expecting others to learn your language does not.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

My dude, the US doesn't even have English as the official language and it doesn't operate entirely in English either.

[-] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

We made it an explicit point to not favour any one of our member states, this includes the language.

So as long as we have members with English as their official language, we can't.

And that is a good thing.
