It's a "The past is fucked up", not "These are all bad people". In fact, the molester grandfather is the only bad person there.
Getting preventable diseases that have lifelong effects sucks. Being forced to stay in the closet sucks. Being medicated as an alternative to socially undesirable behavior rather than a genuine attempt to alleviate distressing and handicapping symptoms of mental illness sucks. Being stuck in gender roles sucks.
