I looked this up yesterday. IOC has no legal recourse if an athlete refuses to return a medal. It's generally done "in the spirit of sportsmanship."

As I don't see this case as being good sportsmanship, I'd tell them to pound sand, I'm keeping it.

They might not be invited to the next Olympics, and if they are a young american gymnist, they may have a chance at more medals.

She's twenty three. In the world of gymnastics, it's not likely to return at twenty seven. Possible, but not likely.
