Whats is going to happen in 24hours? 48hours?

Short Term Impact

I think the first 12-24hours will drive many users into confusion. The lurkers will switch over within the first 1-2days, the active community will split up, some remaining on multiple platforms (incl. reddit).

Medium Term Impact

Reddit lives from it's moderators. But nowadays a good AI might replace that, will have a rough start but gradually become better. I still believe the communities will become streamlined and heavily automoderated due to lack of human reason. That will hurt discussion, conversations and though provoking comments.

Fediverse

The Fediverse will definitiv gain from this. Reddit will not see an immediate fall but gradually decline. The majority of users will mostly be lurkers.

What if...

BUT, with no API, no bots.. Maybe, this will actually work out for reddit and a more active community will build up again. There 's always the option for a black swan of any kind.

I think I'm starting to annoy my friends giggling at everything that's going on, but ffs, watching all the drama this weekend has been fun.

I'm sad to be watching the fall of a site I enjoyed for so long, but the way it's falling is so cathartic. I'm especially loving all the malicious compliance with subs that have been forced to reopen. For nearly two decades, the admins' stance has been "if you don't like the direction a mod is taking a sub, make a new sub," so the era of John Oliver rules and so on is just excellent to see. #reddit #boycottreddit

i knew reddit was drowning from some of their questionable ads, like the HeGetsUs hipster Jesus bros and very shitty logos made for shady medical practices. and if you're in the States, constant barrage of GoArmy recruitment ads

gee, reddit ceo, did your more reputable sponsors abandon you due to your greedy bullshit and you had to scrape the bottom of the barrel?

"Some Thoughts on Ways Mods Can Stay in Malicious Compliance, in Order To Prolong the Protest and Their Removal by Admins.

r/funny should be proud. They sat in the crosshairs for longer than anyone thought they would. I hope they, and all the other subs pressured into going restricted or public, continue to show their support in some unique way. Some ideas:

  • Include kbin/lemmy equivalent magazines in the banner and a sticky post. Sticky an autocomment on every post with fediverse info.

  • Only use the standard mod tools and halve your time commitment. "We went back to using the tools they gave us and this is how it will be from now on. Welcome to the new Reddit you guys chose by not supporting the blackout!"

  • Mark the sub NSFW. Realistically, there's rarely a reason anyone in an office should be on Reddit. This should also make the sub unavailable for mobile users when the API changes go into effect.

  • Make every day April Fool's Day. Like when r/DataIsBeautiful posted nothing but pics of Star Trek's Data. If you have no ideas, just google the sub name and see what you find!

    • PIC is also:
      • a type of long catheter that is inserted through a peripheral vein, often in the arm, into a larger vein in the body, used when intravenous treatment is required over a long period. Seems like an important topic for r/Pics to cover. (Dictionary.com)
      • Slang abbreviation for Partner In Crime, so maybe change focus to famous crime duos (Urban Dictionary)
      • Slang for a movie, so become the movie subreddit (Encyclopedia Britannica)
  • Set unreasonable posting requirements without an announcement, but noting the change in the side bar. Gotta read the fine print."

Set posts to require moderator approval.

  • Approve 1 post every hour or only approve really poor quality ones.

Fracture the community.

  • Announce alternative subs for your topic, which you also control, and encourage unsubbing from the original sub. Do some of the above, while also setting the sub to require accounts be subscribed for a month to post. Those that leave will find nothing in the alt subs, which they can't post to, and be unable to post on the main sub for a month. Also, fracturing the large subs will reduce traffic overall, due to the chaos.

  • Remove and replace scrub mods where possible. If you get booted down the line, another supporter can continue the pattern.

  • Forward any post remotely related to a product advertised on Reddit to that company's media contact for approval. Advertisers should know what is being associated with their brands. (And if some really gnarly stuff gets submitted by some non-mod account, it might be more impactful.

Original starbucks post by accused mod a_knife

Post about what ACTUALLY happened

Proof of only active mods agreeing to go private

Proof that a_knife doesn't even MOD the sub they made the unilateral decision to reopen

Proof of a_knife removing a mod

Funny thing is, Reddit will likely boot the 3 of them, and make a_knife top mod, which is DIRECTLY AGAINST their claims to remove any mods making unilateral decisions, because of course, it only applies if that unilateral decision is to go private. Spread the word

Reddit is trying to turn mods against mods.

Here’s the note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen:

“If there are mods here who are willing to work towards reopening this community, we are willing to work with you to process a Top Mod Removal request or reorder the mod team to achieve this goal if mods higher up the list are hindering reopening. We would handle this request and any retaliation attempts here in this modmail chain immediately.

Our goal is to work with the existing mod team to find a path forward and make sure your subreddit is made available for the community which makes its home here. If you are not able or willing to reopen and maintain the community, please let us know.”

So, they will remove top mods who are for being private, but keep the many top mods who keep their subs open despite their members and other mods wanting to join the protest? Mhm, okay, Regreddit.

Which is why /u/jailbaitlover I mean /u/spez is sending the message that they would gladly give total power to whatever mod crosses the picket line so they can boot the rest.

If Reddit had to replace all these mods it would be complete chaos and is not much better than the blackout. They will see the same exact problems Twitter has seen since they fired most of their content moderators.

TEXT FROM POST: "Attached: 2 images 👿 PSA: #Reddit is restoring deleted and overwritten posts to save what they consider "their data". This is a new low and probably illegal at least in Europe. You can send a GDPR or CPRA request here: https://www.reddit.com/settings/data-request These are screenshots of my profile on June 14th before and after overwriting and then deleting all my posts with Powerdelete. The reddit blackout is even more effectivte than expected! 5177/8829 (~60%) of subreddits are still dark [1] and the posts per minute are down to 1000 from 1400 [2].

This is huge. Subreddits were supposed to be back up yesterday. I personally missed Reddit the first day but now I am super comfortable here.

Glad to have found a new place to hang out!

Hear me out, I know no one likes ads, probably one of the main reasons why people used 3rd party apps for reddit. I can't exactly donate to help kbin, however if there was a setting I could toggle to opt in viewing ads to support kbin and things like server costs, I'd do it, in hopes for improvement of the website.

What do ya'll think?

Edit: Y'all have made very good points why that is a bad idea, possibly puts pressure on kbin, and well, is selling our data. Likley governed by cooperations that are once again greedy.

I think atleast for now we should try to stick to donation and ad-free ways to support kbin, thank you for your insights and opinions!

FUCK SPEZ! JOIN THE PROTEST! MASS MIGRATION!

We are a magazine dedicated to the protest and boycott of Reddit. We are protesting due to Reddit's unfair API policy changes, the disgusting lying behavior of Spez the CEO, and the forced departure of the Apollo app and other 3rd party apps. Remember, the content on Reddit is generated by US THE USERS. It is OUR DATA they are profiting off of and claiming it as theirs.
