Due to Facebook removing diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and targeting the LGBT community in their policies, and Elon Musk's blatant fascism, we'd like to act in solidarity with other social media platforms and ban all links to Meta and X/Twitter.

So from now on, in this community these links will be removed.

Hopefully this approach makes sense to you, but no matter what, do share your thoughts on this.

Hi there, I though of having this thread pinned mainly because I am looking for sites that have audiobooks that can be listened online without subscription. So if you have any in mind, could you please share?

So far I know only a few of them and they can be inter-related, let's say:

Apart from that, if you have something else to say, please do feel free to use this thread!

I will do my best to post something every week or so. I mostly listen to non-fiction audiobooks, but not exclusively, and looking forward to your posts!

“Social Ecology and Communalism” is a compilation of four potent essays by Bookchin, written between 1989 and 2002. These essays deeply dive into some of our time’s most critical social and ecological challenges, proposing that our ecological issues directly reflect societal disruption.

This is a PDF version from The Anarchist Library. It has the following sections:

  • An Introduction to Social Ecology and Communalism
  • What is Social Ecology?
  • Radical Politics in an Era of Advanced Capitalism
  • The Role of Social Ecology in a Period of Reaction
  • The Communalist Project
  • After Murray Bookchin

The Dawn of Everything - A New History of Humanity | David Graeber, David Wengrow | PART 2

I hesitated posting this audiobook because it is read by an automated voice. I find it to be it such an important book that I thought it is worth having it here. Also, every now and then, it loops some sentences (at least for part 1, I haven't gone through part 2), which is annoying but personally it didn't bother me too much.

If you find a better version, please do share!

This is the link to the full audiobook.

I thought of sharing one of my favorite chapters - and to be clear - there were plenty of those. Her way of writing, as well as what she is writing about, felt kind of soothing to me.

Maybe, starting from chapter 1 would be the best option because it's related to an origin myth. Still, due to the fact that it is divided by topic, I suppose it also works to go trough the titles and start with the one you like best that day for instance, or depending on its length etc.

From wiki:

American Indian Quarterly writes that Braiding Sweetgrass is a book about traditional ecological knowledge and environmental humanities. Kimmerer combines her training in Western scientific methods and her Native American knowledge about sustainable land stewardship to describe a more joyful and ecological way of using our land

Even tho the parts are not divided by chapters, I suppose they can be more or less categorised as follows

  • Part 1 - Preface by Extinction Rebellion
  • Part 2 to 5 - historical analysis
  • Skip parts 6, 7, 8 because they are the same as part 1
  • Part 9 to 12 - analysis of contemporary times & practical systemic change suggestions

The Dispossessed is a science fiction novel written by Ursula K. Le Guin and published in 1974. The novel is set in a fictional universe and tells the story of two planets, Urras and Anarres, and their relationship with each other. The novel explores themes of anarchism, socialism, and the struggle for freedom and equality.

The audiobook version of The Dispossessed is narrated by Don Leslie and was released in 2008. The audiobook is 13 hours and 25 minutes long

The story of The Dispossessed is told through the eyes of the protagonist, Shevek, a physicist from Anarres who travels to Urras to share his research with the scientists there. Anarres is a planet that was settled by anarchists who left Urras in search of a better life. Anarres is a harsh and barren planet, but the people who live there have created a society based on the principles of anarchism and socialism. There is no government or hierarchy on Anarres, and everyone works together for the common good.

Urras, on the other hand, is a planet that is divided into two nations, A-Io and Thu. A-Io is a capitalist society, while Thu is a socialist society. Shevek is fascinated by the differences between the two planets and wants to share his research with the scientists on Urras in the hope of creating a better future for both planets. (...)
