Hi,

A little while back we introduced old.retrolemmy.com. This is not really interesting on its own, but I wondered if we could also get it running on Retrofed. And this was successful by way of a proxy. The cool side effect the proxy had is that lemmy-only apps now also work if you enter old.retrofed.com in your preferred app.

This made the idea of preservation come up, and @Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com wondered if the proxy could be modified to also work on lemmybb and translate to older API versions. And after a while I got forum.retrolemmy.com to work with lemmybb - an old software for lemmy last updated 3 years ago - that makes the fediverse look and work like an old phpbb forum of older days. Most functions are working and functioning as intended, but there can still be some bugs here and there. Some we could probably fix, but some can also be attributed to the older software and it's quirks.

Also, this project got pretty big, but if you want to use it yourself, its at Github. It has full 0.17, limited 0.18 and full 0.19 support for the frontend, and lemmy(current) or piefed for the backend.

Edit: Known limitations:

• No 2fa. As this was only added in lemmy version 0.18.x
• No last reply date/time. This can be enabled, but will call a ton of API calls for every page load, making the site unusable.
• 500: Internal Server Error -There is a real, pre-existing bug in lemmyBB's own code, where it makes a direct fetch, but doesnt handle a missing header gracefully. Unfortunately unfixable without changing the lemmyBB code (and that's against the idea of this project)
• Old posts are at the top instead of new ones - This is because the posts are stickied in the community, making them always be on top. This is especially visible in the "General" community. The new posts are under the stickied posts.

I'm a long time mostly lurker on MBin from a couple of years ago now. If I wanted to contribute to your feed but have limited time, what do you feel you'd like to see more of? News reporting? (Are there neglected issues you wish you saw more of in major comms?) Breaking news? Long-form reads? Text posts? Memes?

Just like Reddit, PieFed keeps track of how many upvotes and downvotes your posts receive and the net value of all the votes received is called your “reputation” (Reddit calls it “karma”). This is not shown in the UI anywhere (except to administrators), to dissuade the karma-farming behavior common on Reddit. Reputation is not a game or status symbol, it is a mechanic for enhancing trust and safety on PieFed.

Some people have criticized PieFed for this, calling it a “social credit system” similar to the one in China so I thought it’d be good to explain exactly what it does so people don’t need to guess or rely on hearsay.

Trans people have a lot to deal with and there’s many of them on the fediverse so I’ve taken special care to ensure their voices influence the development of PieFed and have built some features with them in mind.

I’m trying to add PieFed stuff as I can, but it’s a bit of a hassle decoupling how conjoined everything gets.

And I have offered code in the past, Rimu has opted to block me on every platform he controls, deny my PR’s, and outright steal my code with the intention of not attributing it to me. So I’m no longer interested in trying to contribute to PieFed.

ich bräuchte etwas Unterstützung. Ich werde morgen Nacht, vorher schaffe ich es nicht, aufgrund eines familiären Schicksalsschlages bis auf weiteres in #Rotthalmünster Stellung beziehen. Um da zu sein für jemanden der immer da war. Und jetzt 2:30 Stunden entfernt von der Kernfamilie „verlegt“ alleine ist nachts.

Und ich suche keine Bleibe, kein Zimmer nichts. Ich und mein Bus. Wenn ich irgendwo schlafen und verarbeiten kann, dann dort. Wir stehen irgendwo. Darum geht es auch nicht.

Es geht darum mal einen Wasserkanister aufzufüllen, eine Trommel Wäsche für nen Fünfer waschen - nehm ich nass mit. Sowas.

A search engine that makes videos across the whole PeerTube network actually findable

Peerseek is a federated video search engine for PeerTube. It continuously crawls public PeerTube instances, indexes their videos in PostgreSQL, and serves a fast JSON API and web UI at peerseek.video. At the time of writing it indexes roughly 940,000 videos from about 1,600 instances.

Yea. How do I check which instances can see eachother? Also other stuff like this instance I am using has dislikes disabled or the ones that ignore delete requests.

What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Changes

This release significantly reduces memory usage for the Lemmy backend. Metrics on production instances show a reduction up to 10 times. Here you can see the statistics from a few different instances. Read on for a technical explanation below. Note that the change only affects x86, there is no difference on ARM (e.g. Raspberry Pi), see here for details.

lemmy.ml (overall RAM usage including OS, Docker, PostgreSQL etc):

How was such a major improvement possible? Memory usage in languages like Rust or C is managed by a so-called memory allocator. It requests large chunks of RAM from the operating system, and provides smaller chunks when needed in the program. For example, every string (such as post titles or markdown text) require chunks of memory to store them. When processing the data is completed, the memory should be freed and released, or reused.

Until version 0.19.19 Lemmy used the mimalloc memory allocator, which is supposedly better than the default glibc allocator. Yet a recent blog post points out that mimalloc does not play well with the tokio async runtime. It suggests to use jemalloc instead. Changing memory allocators is very simple in Rust, it only requires a single line of code. So we tried that, deployed the change on lemmy.ml and it immediately proved effective.
