Really great comment! I do not agree with the edit, tho. Apple's dude is the one with they on his and, on an Apple device. Doesn't look like Apple is depicted as an innocent agent here, to me

When there is less work to do, god forbid we get creative. Like having all the people doing less work overall. No, let's gamble on the lives of some people. These people!

good!

Germany’s decision to anchor ODF at the heart of its national sovereign stack confirms what we have argued for years: open, vendor-neutral document formats are not a niche concern for some technology specialists and FOSS advocates. They are a fundamental infrastructure for democratic, interoperable and sovereign public administrations.

I'm gonna repeat this, as expressed here, to a few people

I love Fairphones, but GrapheneOS developers are very clear on why they son't support phones other than Pixels. If other phones complied with those requirements, they would support them. I really hoped the OEM they're working with to support from another brand would be Fairphone, but the most educated guess I've seen is Motorola

Recently I bought a used ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen.4 that seems to be in very good condition overall but one thing: the graphical performance is well under the expectation. And that's shit, because that was actually the main reason I decided to buy this laptop now.

The graphics card is a Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti laptop, and it is performing consistently and slightly below the GTX 950M I've been using up until now. This last card is in an Ideapad that's identical in specs and configuration to the new one, but with a 4 gens older GPU and a 5 gens older CPU. Both also have Intel integrated chips, that I also benchmarked (with Furmark), and I've been getting the same consistent distribution: older iGPU < newer iGPU < 3050 < 950, in which the 3050 makes no sense. This damn laptop has a 2K screen (16:10) but struggles even slightly more than the other one to run at decent 1080p FPS, while everything else runs faster because of the better CPU.

I finally tried out both CachyOS and KDE (I love Plasma!) with the new laptop. I expected an effortless install with Cachy but ended up spending hours trying to debug the bad performance, so I decided to install Windows to test it out and confirm if I was properly utilizing the card. I got the same results.

I've tried the discrete card drivers from the Lenovo website, and I now have running the one from Nvidia's. I've got no problem report from anywhere, but the system information in Nvidia control panel displays some unexpected values, like "Graphics boost clock" at 1035 MHz when it should be 1485 MHz, "Memory bandwith" at 176.03 GB/s when it should be 195 GB/s and "Bus" with PCIe x8 Gen4 when it should be PCIe x16 Gen4. I took the reference values from here and here for the bus spec.

It's the 60W variant (as displayed in the Nvidia CP) and I didn't know there were several - so something I can't change in this card? Anyway, this one is close to the best (35~80W range)

Could it have been undervolted/underclocked previously? Is that something that persists between operating systems? Could you do that on this Thinkpad?

The BIOS only lets me force the use of the discrete card and has some power setting for performance that was already on with AC power.

I have MSI Afterburner installed, can I learn something with it? I think the card is fucked somehow, but would really love to find out exactly what's wrong, since it's still performing and also because I might wanna pass it on to someone who would be conscious of the limitations, and get another one just like it! The thing is I love this laptop, it's exactly what I wanted, but without a decent performance in some graphic intense games.

Ultimately I supose I might eventually have to get the board schematics and start measuring currents, but is there something I can try before that?

Anyway, long post already but I would apreciate if someone could help me with these matters. I know Thinkpads usually don't even have discrete graphic cards but I thought some one here coukd help me. Thanks!

Video from GamersNexus on the importance of self-hosting, with some nice references like Rustdesk, Tailscale and Cory Doctorow

But I didn't understand, when they were showcasing a rack computer starting at around 20:20, who Wendell (the guy with glasses) meant with they who made that computer. What platform is that, what's its name?

Deluge 2.2.0 released (git.deluge-torrent.org)

After about 3 years since the last stable release, Deluge version 2.2.0 is available for download.

These days, qBittorrent seems to be the most popular torrent client in Open Source and Linux communities, but I thought it's worth mentioning the news on this long lived FOSS alternative.

so this only gets undone once there is another community created on .LBZ that starts getting traction and your new community on .world risks becoming irrelevant, along with your relative power in the situation..

Do people mix VoxeLibre with other mods? Or any other game, for that matter. I know VoxeLibre also is a collection of mods, but I've been afraid of mixing it with other mods, since I've seen errors popup, and I haven't really tried that many at a time.

I was trying to do a generally vanilla Minecraft like experience and only had VoxeLibre, and two mods, Goblins and Auroras, and the hostile mobs would not start to burn when they day came. Later, in another situation, I logged in at night and, after hanging in my miniscule shelter for ages, I realized the sun was not coming up. I relogged and suddently it was day, but again the mobs outside would not burst in flames. Flames woukd appear on them dor hald a second and then disappear. After jumping around then for minutes waitinf for them to die, I died myself

Now I'm left wondering what was the cause, if a bug in Voxelibre itself or maybe one of the other mods interfering with it. So, right now, I'm afraid of adding any mod inti the mix. Will start a new world only running the game and see how it works out

I also tried running only the game with Animalia mod and one every 8 new worlds I'd get errors pop up imediatly upon world creation. After playing a bit and realizing I would have duplicate items for all animak products, I also gave up on it

Support e-mail (sh.itjust.works)

Can anyone share a Proton support e-mail?

I've just tried to find an answer on their new support page and I'm baffled by the whole experience! Specially the fact that, after not finding the answer I was looking for, I cannot, for the love of some dog, get to an address I can e-mail with the question

It was the same kafkaeske experience I've had with shitty services with shitty websites where, after looking for your particular situation, you end up choosing 'other' just to get pushed to the begining of this shitty flow

"Faster assistance is just a few clicks away" - what the actual fuck?? wrong path, man

When one downloads a new update through the built-in updater, where does the file get put? I'm having trouble during the automated update process with the latest TWRP, and would like to do the dirty manual update

Banner graphics (sh.itjust.works)

I picked OpenTTD for the weekend and scoured BaNaNas and could not find the add-ons with the graphics that are being used in the banner of this community.

I managed to find some better 8pp trees, with "U&Trees" by Ufiby but I'd like to find those ground tiles and bridge graphics

Awnyone knows what's in use there?

I'm looking for a new laser printer for a small office but I don't know what to get

I don't know what to trust around online reviews but am looking for something that will be as reliable and durable as possible for a small office that will print a couple dozen pages on most days, and less so on the others

I'd rather spend above average just to have it be reliable and durable, as stated above. If it could be on the smaller size it would be preferable since space is a concern

So I thought about asking here for recommendations. Thank you

I'm in need of a cable crimper and some other network tools like a tone gen/probe, cable snipper/stripper, and I'll probably also get a cable tester, for a couple of jobs I'll be doing soon

So, I'm assembling a basic toolkit to install the physical network parts, and I'm asking here for recommendations on mid and high quality tools so I can decide on what to get

As one should do with tools, I'm ready to spend a buck (or euro, in this case) to get good and durable stuff, but these days looking for reviews online is a marketing shitshow, so I thought I'd come here to look for recommendations and try to find someone with actual practical knowledge and experience

Any advice is welcome!

my take on it is that i am completely against any kind of bridging between the platforms. i do think the fediverse in general is in danger, by being a victim of the "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" strategy

as many on lemmy, i use this platform because of its decentralized, open-source, not-for-profit nature, and think the whole fediverse community would be in jeopardy if we don't act

this is great! i have a friend who needs a new phone and is ordering one, and i'm gonna get my hands on it to help him out and eventually flashing LineageOS on it if it comes out

i just wish they complied with the android stack security features so that it would be compatible with GrapheneOS. it would be the perfect phone

i'd just like to comment on this comment section

since i've joined lemmy some months ago i've seen the nuanced discussion i was so relieved and happy to find here degrading. this section ilustrates that well. the nuanced and cautious are still there, but are being briganded against in a way i don't think they were before

maybe i'm sounding like an "eternal september" elitist here, but i do like open discussions on the internet, with all the ugliness that's bound to happen. i just really hope with all my heart that, in the midst of it all, the good things don't go away
