The gastritis is..... bad. And I'm tired of working through the pain. But my friend made me dinner this evening which was amazing because I'm so tired of making food that's suitable for me to eat.

Never take ibuprofen on an empty stomach.

Hi all! I'm a big fan of comfortable shoes and I've been wearing eccos for years now. However I've recently come to realise that they cannot be repaired (something to do with the material they're made from).

I'm on the hunt for a new pair of sneakers that are equally comfortable and also repairable.

For context, I spend a lot of time outdoors in a cool temperate climate so the shoes must be waterproof (i.e. leather or equivalent) as well as able to withstand hours of being walked in. I'm also in an urban environment so style is a consideration. I'm not looking for anything with bright colours or fancy designs, but moreso something simple and versatile that I can wear to work, on my bike and to the pub.

If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears! I've recently been looking at some ON trail running shoes but I've been reading mixed things about their ability to withstand heavy use. Plus I've no idea how they compare to ecco in terms of how comfy they are so if anyone has any experience with both I'd love to hear it.

Thanks in advance!

I don't mind cleaning that much but the laundry really gets my goat because I can't just DO it. You get me?

Like, the dishes for example. I do those, or I put them in a dishwasher where they're cleaned and dried and it's just one thing.

With the laundry I have to separate everything so I can't even wash stuff all at the same time. Then it takes two hours for the washing machine to be done and then they're wet. And if I leave them too long in the washing machine they get that mouldy damp smell so I have to wash again. And then there's the drying. Hanging up socks should be illegal, it takes so long and for what?? One wear and then they're back in the laundry basket? Kill me.

Oh now your stuff is dry? Now you have to take it to a secret third place (your wardrobe). It takes so much time and energy to get the washing and drying done that the last part often doesn't get done.

And. It. Never. Ends.

Someone PLEASE invent a wardrobe that does mini loads of laundry and also hangs your clothes to dry but also that doesn't make your home mouldy.

Or even just. A smaller washing machine that operates with a crank and only takes a few turns to wash your clothes so that I don't have to leave it for two hours in a washing machine and forget about it.

I don't think I'm being articulate at all here but whatever. Laundry needs to get its shit together. We live in the future and it still SUCKS.

This whole review had me screaming. I need more people to appreciate this.

(Sorry bout the paywall, The Irish Times should let you read 2 articles for free, 12ft.io doesn't seem to work with them anymore)

I just dropped off my mate to the emergency dept and the staff wouldn't let me stay with him. He's thankfully OK now but needs to stay in overnight. Can anyone suggest some memes to send to him to get him through the night? Maybe hospital related, maybe just wholesome ones.

I've been making the same three bean chilli and lentil and chickpea dahl for years now and I'm trying to expand my repertoire for midweek meals.

I'm not an amazing cook so I like to make a big pot of something that I can freeze and eat over the course of a few weeks.

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

The Dahl

The three bean chilli recipe is easy AF:

Ingredients: 3x tins of different beans (I usually go for kidney, black beans and canneloni)

1x Tin sweetcorn

1 onion, chopped

2 Bell peppers, chopped

Jalapeños, chopped

Vegetable stock cube

Tin tomatoes

Cumin

Paprika

Hot chilli powder

Cayenne pepper

Salt & pepper

I throw the whole lot in a slow cooker. Then I fill one of the tins with water and throw that in too. Then leave on high for 4 hours.

I can't remember how much of the seasoning the original recipe said to put in. I measure that with my heart ♥

Oh god this is depressing. I used to immediately go on reddit to see if anyone else had read it and read what they thought 🤣

Apart from that I wear the ear off my partner about the writing and the themes and the cultural context and how reading it in the 21st century changes the text. I rarely write down what I thought of a book, but that actually sounds like quite a nice thing to do.

Shouldn't books be sorted by ISBN? :-)

I stopped drinking on the 18th of March 2023. Because of where I live and how my culture socialises, this was a huge step. But to be honest, in hindsight it was just something I'd been putting off for a long time. The hangovers did just become a nightmare to deal with, plus I didn't feel like I was doing well with my personal relationships because of it. I'm glad to have all that time back, although I miss part of the social aspect. I'm working on creating a sober social life but it's very early days.

How has your sobriety journey been for you?

I absolutely loved using r/stopdrinking as a resource. Now that I'm not on reddit so much I'd love to find a new community here! Has anyone created a sobriety community on the fediverse yet?

Yeah they've needed a lot of that recently. Been some other issues going on in their life that I'm trying to support them through but we definitely deal with pain in different ways. I'm an open book whereas they're very quiet. Maybe this was a therapeutic burrito. I hope so.

No diet that I'm aware of, so hiding it from me doesn't make sense from that POV. Maybe they just didn't want to share??

[-] neamhsplach@beehaw.org 8 points 1 year ago

We're working through some stuff right now for sure. I'm just so glad it was a burrito

[-] neamhsplach@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

Clearly!! I'd do crazy things for a burrito too, maybe that's why they kept it a secret 🤔

I quite like Beehaw and their Be(e) nice philosophy. Angry online arguments aren't for me personally and it's nice to be part of a space that promotes a more chilled out vibe. Plus it seems there are plenty of other instances that are OK with the usual online bickering we've all become accustomed to over the years so if I ever want to read another heated argument about what constitutes a grilled cheese I know where to go haha!

r/france was really fun to hang around for language learning reasons! I loved their sense of humour. Their thread about whether the subreddit should blackout (i.e. strike) over what was going on was absolutely hilarious. It went something like:

Mods: Hey r/france we're wondering whether we should strike on... Redditors: Yes.

Not far off my CV in terms of length and variety!! Seeing stuff like this makes me feel better about my chequered employment history. Glad to hear things sound settled for you now! Hoping that'll be me soon too. I actually quite like training people so I'm hoping that's where I end up. Especially if it means management leave me alone haha.

Hon the unions ✊️ nice to meet you!!

[-] neamhsplach@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Thank you for the trigger warning haha!

This would be a great feature to roll out, mostly because it encourages people to think critically in a way that's as engaging (addictive?) as clicking "like" on a post. Great idea!
