Cars are obviously good for long distances but maybe cars could be banned from city centres (perhaps with exceptions for disabled people who rely on cars, and goods vehicles should probably be allowed). For getting around a city, people can use public transport, or bicycles, or their feet to walk.

Also in cases where cars are used, electric cars are probably a good idea because it results in cleaner air.

The thing about the Convention is that it constrains governments, and it constrains the way that governments can treat minorities and people it doesn't like... If we were out of the ECHR, you wouldn't have that constraint

Tories are salivating at the thought

Some people in Birmingham are putting up anti-racism posters to express opposition to hate incidents. Also of course there have been the flags going up on lamp posts which the article says have "caused fear and anxiety".

Thoughts?

Six neighbours (three men and three women) standing on a pavement in their neighbourhood. The woman in the middle of the photo is holding a sign which says "Brummies united against racism & hate crime", with three hashtags underneath: "#brumunited", "#fightracism", and "#noplaceforhate".

To be fair we have seen quite a bit of infighting among right-wingers in the last few years though... first the Tories tore themselves apart over Brexit, then they replaced Cameron with Theresa May, more infighting ensued, then we had Boris, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and now Kemi Badenoch, and some Tories are saying Kemi won't last long - Jenrick clearly wants to replace her. Then there's Reform, and two of their MPs have now left the party - Rupert Lowe has started his own thing called Restore Britain.

Anyway, I don't know what to expect from Your Party but I would be interested to see what policies they propose.

Brit here. I'm surprised the map says "fall" for the UK because I don't think I've ever heard a Brit say "fall" for autumn. I think "fall" is just an American thing, not a British thing. Cool map anyway.

Green energy is good, but I'm sceptical of China's intentions these days. They seem to have a pretty aggressive stance towards other countries, as seen in their handling of the nine-dash line.

I just get the sense that China is less interested in helping the whole world, and more interested in subjugating the whole world.

Zarah sounds similar to Zack Polanski, the Greens leader, with her messaging:

“The truth is, Reform is just another wing of the political establishment,” she said. “Funded by billionaires and aristocrats, fronted by a millionaire stockbroker, an ex-public school boy, Nigel Farage. He is peddling racism to distract us from the real agenda: more privatisation, more deregulation, more handouts for the rich, more cuts for everyone else.”

Yes that's a fair point about trying to rejoin with a slim majority in favour. The majority could flip after some time, potentially.

Realistically I don't think the UK is going to rejoin the EU for the next few years, but I think it could well become a more popular political idea over time, as the effects of Brexit become more apparent. People might start to feel it in their pockets more. So maybe the UK will end up rejoining in the next 20, 30, 40 years. Who knows though.

In a post on X, the committee says it has awarded Maria Corina Machado the Nobel Peace Prize "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy".

I expect Donald Trump will write an angry social media post about this, claiming that he should have won.

Is this guy right? Should Brexit be reversed?

The article links to some interesting YouGov statistics about current British opinion on Brexit. For example, a majority of Brits support rejoining the EU:

A chart showing some statistics regarding British opinion towards the EU. For example, 36% of Brits apparently "strongly support" rejoining the EU, 20% somewhat support rejoining the EU, 10% don't know if they support rejoining the EU, 10% somewhat oppose rejoining the EU, and 24% strongly oppose rejoining the EU. The rest of the stats in this image can be seen on YouGov's website, in an article posted on June 19th, 2025.
