It used to be a slang term people trying to sound hip would use, but that was many decades ago -- 1930s or 1950s I think.

Yeah, the current thinking is just to have the one magazine for now unless people have good reasons why that won't work. Of course a lot depends on whether there are any active bugs federating between the two systems but I think right now things are copacetic.

It's a great point. This kind of legislative activism is frequently done in public on Twitter, Facebook, etc. as well so the risks are low in general but it's still something to make people aware of. It's a real contrast with anything that's direct action, where the fediverse is a non-starter.

Agreed that there are plenty of problematic instances led by cis people that everybody federates with, including mastodon.social. For eightpoint, I don't know how many instances have and haven't refederated ... for that matter I don't even know how many defederated originally. Some instances see it the way you do: the abuser's gone, so as long as there's no continued problems, refederating makes sense. Those who are still defederated probably see it as a question of ongoing safety: the admin mistakenly trusted and gave power to an abuser, and then defended them, so they're likely to make similar mistakes in the future. It's a matter both of moderation philosophy and reactions to the specifics of this situation.

Thanks, glad you liked it!

Very cool, glad you're back!

Agreed. There's a similar issue on Mastodon that's been confusing people for years and still hasn't been addressed, let's hope Lemmy prioritizes it a bit more!

"A really nasty post that should be moderated" is now #2 on the front page ... what could possibly go wrong?

Hmm, I don't think I got a notification from this.

EDIT: I did get a notification, I must just not have noticed it. That's good, I guess.

I think it's also compatible with Friendica groups, and forums like Discourse are testing out federation as well, so there's certainly potential. @maegul@lemmy.ml calls it "the threadiverse", I wasn't sure about the term at first but it's growing on me

this is a perfectly fine comment, will it go away if I moderate out the parent comment?
