Why are linux options light on the tablet front? It should work the same as on a laptop

[-] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

Why did you two opt for XMPP rather than Signal Messenger?

[-] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 1 points 9 hours ago

Right. But in this particular case it doesn’t make sense. If microbial life were found on, say, Mars then that would be a discovery by NASA, which is a civilian agency. As far as I’m aware you don’t need a security clearance to work at a civilian agency.

On the other hand if the US  found some unknown craft flying in their sky that would immediately become a military matter and so be classified by default

Yeah. If they classify microbial life because it conflicts with religious dogma then you’d expect them to classify any scientific finding that conflicts with religious dogma, which doesn't seem to be the case.

David Grusch is another, more recent nerd to fall under this category

Why would they classify that information if its just microbial? The motivation for classification is clear if the aliens are flying around in UFOs (so they can reverse engineer their tech without adversaries of the US finding out) but there is no realistic motivation for why they might classify microbial life

You don't have to get your friends involved, you can just do something nice for her. Just pretend that its Mothers Day or something

[-] ageedizzle@piefed.ca 4 points 1 day ago

If you don’t want to celebrate your birthday, you can take the day to celebrate your mom. She’s the one who did all the work, after all. And I think pushing an entire human being out of your birth canal is worthy of some recognition.

Yes. But it will be interesting to see if anyone else is implicated once they examine Andrew’s online accounts

Assuming he hasn’t destroyed the evidence, this could potentially lead to more arrests once police search his laptop and read his texts messages and emails.

I'm asking for public policy ideas here. A lot of countries are enacting age verification now. But of course this is a privacy nightmare and is ripe for abuse. At the same time though, I also understand why people are concerned with how kids are using social media. These products are designed to be addictive and are known to cause body image issues and so forth. So what's the middle ground? How can we protect kids from the harms of social media in a way that respects everyone's privacy?

I don't need something practical. I just need something fun to keep me motivated.

My whole life I’ve been told that if you fall asleep in the bath then you’ll drown, or something. But is this true? I’m a grown ass adult I think I’d just wake up if my head fell under water

It’s my understanding that mass produced items are all basically the same. If you buy something like a toothbrush, for example, then any other toothbrush from that same assembly line is going to be basically the same and have all the same specs (with the exception with minor defects here and there), because the machinery and process to make any those toothbrushes are all basically the same.

But that can’t be the case with locks and keys. Because if every lock and key were the same then there’d be no point in having them. Anyone could just bought the same key/lock combo could use it to unlock your front door. So all or most keys and locks must be unique. So how are they mass produced in a way that preserves their uniqueness?

Hi everyone.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about Piefed's rapid growth due to some strategic posts on Reddit, specifically the r/BuyCanadian subbreddit (see here: https://piefed.ca/post/497540). That's great! But I think we need to diversify a bit.

Because, if this growth is to be long-term and sustainable, then one thing our community needs, quite frankly, is more shitposts. Because right now the most active posts on lemmy.ca are links to news articles with serious discussions in the comments. And the memes that do exist are often not very lighthearted. And this sort of content is great! But it doesn't necessarily appeal to the masses.

Think of it: what does your average Jim the Plumber Joe Shmo from Winnipeg or Edmonton want? He wants memes! He wants to laugh! If we are to get more normies on this platform (which is essential for our growth) then we need more shitposts! We need meme pages with lots of engagement! So that is why I am suggesting a new type of Reddit-advertising campaign: one that targets the finest shitposters our Great Nation has to offer. If we can get those guys and gals to join our platform, then we're as golden as a Canada goose.

So the question then becomes, where to these talented shitposters and shitpostees reside? Where can we find them? The answer to that is clear: r/EhBuddyHoser, the beloved Canadian meme page. And what's the best way to advertise on a meme page? Well, through memes of course!

That's right folks, it's time we take our viral marketing campaign to the next level.

This is a monumental task, and it will require input from funny Canadians residing in all corners of the fediverse. But, in the spirit of getting the ball rolling, I have already thrown together a prototype. (Yes, I know its crappy, but it's just a prototype; feedback welcome.)

If you have the time, please also reply with your own memes in the comments, where we can critique them, build them, grow them, and eventually use them for our viral marketing campaign.

Finally, we will also need a brave soul with an established Reddit account to venture into r/EhBuddyHoser and shitpost on our behalf. We need someone to shitpost not just for our entire community, but for our entire country. We need someone to shitpost for Canada. Do we have any volunteers?
