Remember when we were talking about Jeff Mills a couple weeks ago? That's exactly what made/makes him such an outstanding techno DJ. Not the music he composed, but that he'd only play a minute or so of each song before mixing in another.

You can't really "mix" punk songs like that tho, it'd be too much energy for too long a time, there's a reason the songs are that short.

A couple things I like about these photos. These are "real people", not heavily-filtered Insta influencer wannabes trolling for followers. These are people of various ages and genders and styles.

Like, look at this guy. Is he from Lord of the Rings? If he isn't, then Tolkien was quite remiss in neglecting him.

I like this kid's outfit bc you can just tell she's gonna show this photo to her grandma next week and they'll bond over it.

This one is deceptively simple, there are some great patterns in the shoulder spikes, the metal snakes in the headpiece, and the eye decoration.

waaah so jealous...

I hear ya. I especially gotta take a look at Iola Velegem's archive of photos, especially for the Victorian period-era clothes, I'm trying to come up with some businesslike outfits in case I need to go back in the office a lot.

I had to look that up, killer song, yeah everyone in that video would totally look at home at WGT lel.

Wave-Gotik-Treffen is “one of the largest events of the gothic, cybergoth, steampunk, and rivethead subcultures worldwide”. It started yesterday and is running through this weekend in Germany.

The Victorian Picnic started as "an opportunity for attendees to dress in elaborate Victorian-era-inspired clothing. Participants would gather to socialize, showcase their outfits, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon reminiscent of the Victorian era." Over the years, people started wearing more goth-, fantasy-, and steampunk-inspired outfits.

The following are in German but automated translators work pretty well:

This album and several singles from it were posted a couple weeks back, but I heard this song on a stream recently and thought it was worth special notice.

the Youtube version is indeed cut and surprisingly the Tubi one isn’t.

Tubi is pretty good about not cutting movies. The only thing I've seen it missing is part(s?) of Bad Lieutenant.

ofc I have no illusions, tubi is only tolerable bc uBlock Origin still works to block ads, evetually tubi will enshittify and block adblockers. Also it's only available in some countries (us, canada? england? australia? nz?)

sounds like an interesting movie, I'ma watch it next chance I get!

When I was in high school one lunchtime I was sitting there reading sci fi by myself like a total nerd and some other kids were sitting nearby and they started smoking cigarettes, which was against the rules. Anyway a teacher saw them just as the lunch period ended and the teacher said: "all right You, You, You, and You stay behind!" And the teacher pointed at me, because I was nearby. I was like: wow, I haven't been in trouble before! I was writing a lot of short fiction and poetry at the time so I thought it'd be a good experience. So I sat there and listened for a while as the teacher berated the kids. But eventually I realized I'd gotten all I was gonna get from this teacher's unimaginative lecture, so I stood up and was like: I gotta go to class. The teacher glared at me and was gonna go off, but the other kids were cool, they were like nah he wasn't a part of this. The teacher looked at me, looked at my sci fi book, looked at me again, then realized yeah these kids would never have anything to do with this dork. So they let me run off to class.

I think the really wealthy old-money people would never say such a thing. Because such a thing just wouldn't occur to them. And if someone said that to them, they'd just kind of smile and nod the same way they would to a toddler. Maybe say "Ah, yes, very good." So that's probably the best response.

But if I were writing a screenplay and had to come up with a one-liner I'd probably go with, "Just goes to show you can't buy class."

WARNING: I think this is a bad, bad movie. I usually only post this on !bmoviebonanza@lemmy.world but this one involves vampires so I thought someone here might be interested. Basically it's a bunch of people watching a movie and commenting about it online. Details below.

Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein (1972) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, June 8, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT which is 1am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows side-by-side on a computer. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.

How to watch the movie:

The film follows Dr. Rainer von Frankenstein (Price), who successfully captures Count Dracula (Vernon). Along with the Doctor's monster (Fernando Bilbao) the doctor controls the vampire for his own evil ends. The film is a co-production between Spain, Portugal, France and Liechtenstein.
...
From contemporary reviews in Spain, a review in La Vanguardia said the film would be entertaining to audiences, stating that the plot was confusing and "delirious" which would make audiences either react in fear or laughter.[9] El Mundo Deportivo praised the cinematography, while stating that the plot lacks originality; and that the focus on the quality photography made the plot lose its rhythm.[2] In the Canadian newspaper L'Action [fr] found the film lacked subtlety and the end result was more grotesque than horrific and that Dennis Price was unconvincing in the role of Dr. Frankenstein.

A big thank you to all the Lemmy instance admins. We only really notice them when things go wrong. And every time something goes wrong, that means all the other admins had to perform superhuman feats so that sort of problem didn't happen to them.

Now it's time for part 3!!?!

The film involves gutter punks who take the anti-establishment message with extreme seriousness and tune out society completely. Spheeris talks to homeless teenagers living on the street or squatting in abandoned buildings in Los Angeles that go by the names of "Why-Me?", "Hamburger", "Troll", "Eyeball", "Squid", and others. ... Performances by four bands were filmed: Final Conflict, Litmus Green, Naked Aggression, and The Resistance.
...
The film premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Freedom of Expression Award. It was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and the Chicago Underground Film Festival, where it received a jury award. However, it never went into general release and was not available on VHS or DVD until the release in 2015 of a box set containing all three films on DVD and Blu-ray. This was partly due to Spheeris refusing to relinquish the rights to the first two parts of the trilogy in order to enable the third to be released. According to an article by Laura Snapes, "there was little demand to see such a depressing movie, and the few distribution offers that Spheeris got required her to hand over the rights to the first two movies, which she refused to do".[4] Decline III was also released separately via streaming video.
