Welcome back to Advent's Amazing Advice! The series where I take popular One-Shots, Adventures, Campaigns, etc., and fully prep them for both New and Busy DMs. This prep includes music, ambiance, encounter sheets, handouts, battle maps, tweaks, and more, so you can run the best sessions possible with the least stress possible!

Inspired by Stranger Things and written by Mike Wheeler himself, this adventure drops your players into a monster hunt like no other. Summoned by Sir Tristan, ruler of a remote mountain realm, your party is tasked with tracking down a fearsome creature known as the Thessalhydra, which has attacked his castle and terrorized the land.

In Part 1, your players will explore a mysterious forest, encounter travelers, priests, and farmers, until they uncover the entrance to the troglodyte caverns. There, they can fight or negotiate their way deeper until they reach the ever-shifting Cursed Labyrinth. Should they solve the riddles of the mysterious Lost Knight, they will be greeted with a portal...to the Upside Down.

Without further ado:

Included in The AAA Collection is:

  • Downloadable copy of DM Notes, including links to music tracks for ambiance and fights
  • Special PDF for all encounters. This includes the enemy stat blocks organized neatly, along with an initiative tracker and spots to mark HP
  • Custom Maps of Troglodyte Cavern

Over 7 dozen other Fully Prepped One-Shots, Adventures, and Campaigns: Click Here

Welcome back to Advent's Amazing Advice! The series where I take popular One-Shots, Adventures, Campaigns, etc., and fully prep them for both New and Busy DMs. This prep includes fully fleshed-out notes, music, ambiance, encounter sheets, handouts, battle maps, tweaks, and more, so you can run the best sessions possible with the least stress possible!

*New: For 2025, I'm updating all my old work to be more accessible for the Visually Impaired! Check out the links below, which contain improved notes with larger font, better contrast, color-blind features, and more!

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is a level 1-3 Adventure, the most recent Starter Set, and successor to The Lost Mine of Phandelver, released by WoTC. In it, your players will sail to the titular Stormwreck Isle, an island shaped by an age of conflict between Chromatic and Metallic Dragons. They'll be able to befriend kobolds, explore fungal grottos, fight those twisted by Orcus, and perhaps save the very island itself!

Have your players create their own characters or jump right in using the Pre-Gens that are built with backstories integrated into the plot!

If you've used my previous notes, you'll know that I take Adventures such as these and do all the difficult and time-consuming book-to-session conversions so you don't have to! I do my best to include Ambiance for every scene, custom battle maps, handouts when needed, spell sheets, encounter sheets, and more!

This may all sound familiar, but seeing as this is a Starter Set, I think it's important to reiterate:

  • Read the Adventure: I know surprising, but it can be extremely confusing when you don't know where everything leads to.
  • Consider the needs of your group: As you've heard or are about to hear a million times, every table is different. If you plan on combining this with a campaign, you'll have to make tweaks here and there.
  • These notes aren't meant to be the end-all-be-all: Tweak to your heart's content, and don't consider any of what's written to be set in stone. For me, having notes like this helps give me the confidence to go off the rails and follow along with what my players want. It helps me understand where things are meant to go and why. Having that understanding allows me to guide the players and create other new and interesting stories. These are all things that will come with experience, though, so don't freak out and enjoy the journey!

Without further ado:

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle:

*Important Errata for Pre-Gens

  • The Rogue’s Investigation bonus should be +3, not zero.
  • The Wizard should have a +2 DEX save, not +3.
  • The High Elf should have longbow proficiency

We're back at it again with one of my favorite creators, Winghorn Press, from the much-loved A Wild Sheep Chase! This Level 3 One-Shot will have your players solving a mystery that might just shake them to their very core!

A fearsome hound has been seen prowling the mist-soaked moors surrounding Cabell Manor, but what is the foul beast searching for? Is there any truth to the rumors tying the family to an ancient devilish evil, or is it just a local superstition?

If they want to solve the mystery, your players will need to keep their wits just as sharp as their swords…

The Delian Tomb is a Level 1 Introductory One-Shot based on Matt Colville's first episode of his Running the Game series on YouTube.

This adventure begins in the backwaters of a small kingdom; It's a quiet place...most of the time. Recently, there has been an influx of goblins in the region, and some of the foul creatures have even begun attacking the farms on the outskirts of the village. Your players are all friends, just traveling through, in search of adventure. It isn't long before they find themselves mixed up in the business of Goblins and pursuing a kidnapped child into the depths of a long-forgotten tomb. This is their opportunity to prove themselves and to rescue someone in need...if they can survive the perils of The Delian Tomb!

Delivery Witches Apply Within is a level 3 One-Shot for 1-2 players. Inspired by Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki and Kiki's Delivery Service, your player will meet a strange black cat who leads them to the Kat and Cake Bakery, where they'll try to prove themselves worthy of the title Delivery Witch by delivering a set of packages. These aren't just any ordinary deliveries; throughout, you'll run into a slew of interesting characters and events, including a druid posing as a cat, a silver dragon, mists that try to teleport you elsewhere, and ghostly apparitions!

Brittney Hay has done an absolutely fantastic job creating this One-Shot. You really feel like you're in a magical, lighthearted world. This One-Shot is a far cry from my usual preps; being for only 1-2 players, you'll have the opportunity to really engage your players. The music is right from Kiki's Delivery Service and blends perfectly with your adventure! I couldn't be happier with how this one turned out!

This One-Shot is from an anthology of One-Shots inspired by Studio Ghibli, Eyes Unclouded; if you like this one, I'm sure you'll find plenty more to fall in love with! Perhaps if this is popular enough, I'll consider prepping even more of them!

*Average Sessions Length: 2-3hrs

Sometimes you just don't want to prep. Sometimes you get a last-minute call to run a session. Maybe it's your first time DMing and you don't know where to start.

Whatever the reason, prep may seem like a mountain to climb. Well, allow me to help you! I remember when I was first trying to figure everything out and I stumbled across A Wild Sheep Chase. It's a fantastic One-Shot that you can get for free over on the DMsguild. The only issue at times can be how do I convert this pdf into an actual session?

Some DMs have a gift, they can read it once and go from there, some are masters at improv, storytelling, and off-the-cuff humor. Well, I unfortunately don't fit that boat and I'm sure many others out there are just like me. I need a ton of notes; because once I've got things organized, then I feel comfortable taking things in new directions.

So welcome to Advent's Amazing Advice! The series where I take popular One-Shots, Adventures, Campaigns, etc. and fully prep them for both New and Busy DMs. This prep includes fleshed-out notes, music, ambiance, encounter sheets, handouts, battle maps, tweaks, and more so you can run the best sessions possible with the least stress possible! Onboarding new DMs should be easy and I hope with this I can help grease the wheels!

White Plume Mountain is an absolute classic Adventure for level 8 players; one that has been talked about for years and has been redone time and again. Heck, it was even ranked the 9th greatest Dungeons & Dragons adventure of all time by Dungeon magazine in 2004. This is the perfect Adventure for those of you who are looking for a bit of combat and a whole lot of puzzle!

Three magical weapons have been stolen recently. Clues in the form of a poem lead those in power to believe the weapons have been brought to a volcano which was once the hideout of a powerful wizard named Keraptis. These are no mere magical weapons, but sentient artifacts. Can your players survive the perils of White Plume Mountain and retrieve them!?

Definitely not trying to be malicious in any way and that's why I added prizes. Only the first-place person would be featured and I would have no use for any of the other prep.

The job itself is basically doing the exact thing that's being done for the contest! Prepping popular One-Shots and Adventures.

I'm offering the same amount that I charge for commissions, so $100 for each One-Shot Prepped; with up to a bonus $100 for each based on how closely the person can match my style. If the person is good enough, then they'll eventually receive a percentage of all profits from Advent's Amazing Advice! Payment is via Venmo, but other ways can be worked out if needed!

For Content Production, I'm only looking for 1-2 prepped One-Shots a month! I'll be guiding the person to match my style and be there to help with anything that pops up along the way. I'll still be prepping other One-Shots and Campaigns as well and expanding new ways to help people!

Hope that helps answer your questions, if you have any more just let me know, I'm only a message away!

Cheers, Advent

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 years ago

I appreciate your feedback! When I make my post, the DM Notes are completely free and able to be used by anyone! The additional One-Shots are a mix of Free and Patron content, but I offer a preview of all of it which can also be used as a starting point for those who need it! I also talk about my Patreon in the last paragraph. I'll try to make it clearer in the future that this is for D&D since we're on a RPG section and not a D&D specific one. Thanks again!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 5 points 2 years ago

Thank you, hope my notes and prep help!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 years ago

You're welcome, I'm super happy to hear that too, It's the whole reason I make these, I really want DMing to be as accessible as possible!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 years ago

Hands down one of the best! I've run it over 3 times to introduce people or test em out before a campaign!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 4 points 2 years ago

DMing can certainly be a lot of work but it's real rewarding and hey guess what If your players love it you can always use any of these resources for future sessions!

100% agree that balancing encounters can be difficult! One tip is that you can take a look at other One-Shots/Adventures that are already balanced and around the level you're looking for and use those!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 9 points 2 years ago

My Intent is to get as many new DMs as possible and make things a whole lot scary for them when they start!

There definitely are other systems, but this is a dnd community and Baldurs Gate 3 is based off of D&D as well, so most people would be looking for something similar!

Granted I do agree that there are a ton of awesome other systems out there, but I find D&D to be the gateway drug that leads to many other places!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 9 points 2 years ago

I posted it separately in different communities?

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 4 points 2 years ago

There are different people in each community, wouldn't I want to reach the largest audience possible? I may be confused, but isn't this similar to Reddit in the sense that each of them are subreddits and different from each other?

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 4 points 2 years ago

I just finished prepping a One-Shot based on Kiki's delivery service that's meant for a DM and 1 Player! I'll be testing it out in a week or two, just thought I'd let you know!!! Even if you've never seen the movie it's pretty fun!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 years ago

Really glad that you like it, I'm always looking for interesting and fun sessions to prep!

Unfortunately, I don't yet, but I do have it planned for the future since I know it's a popular request. I already have a few in mind! It'll probably end up being a 2-3 session adventure as well! That being said I know people have taken my notes and tweaked them for solo play since the only thing you have to adjust is combat!

[-] Advent@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 years ago

Thank you! Ya, not gonna lie it is haha I wouldn't be able to do it without my Patrons. Even crazier is that I'm starting work on Fully Prepping the entirety of Curse of Strahd next! Wish me luck!
