Depending on how much you self host, you may find it hard to keep track of your devices' host names. So what are your naming conventions to keep track everything? Some people stick to descriptive names, others pick themes, like Greek mythology.

Personally, I use Japanese emperors. I've made it all the way to Seinei. Luckily I still have some breathing room to add more services and servers. Much to my wife's chagrin. :)

My network mostly uses NPC and summon names from Final Fantasy XI, because I played that game for many, many years and can associate the personalities of those characters with specific roles the host needs to have. I've also considered using Pokemon names for similar reasons, and with over 1000 current Pokemon species it'd be hard to max out in a home environment.

I don't have DNS set up but I use the names of the gods and ascendants of the Malazan universe.

I'm very uncreative, I name things by role and then enumerate.

Nothing wrong with practical. I'll often name a VM by what service is going on to it as a temporary measure until I'm sure it's going to work out and give it its final name.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Types of Trees, Types of Gems, Greek Gods, Types of Insects.

I did the hawaiian islands because my wife is from Hawaii. I regret it, it was cute and clever, now it is harder to troubleshoot and I max out at 9 (if you count vegas), and I forget which "island" is attached to which, that now I just use IPs which then defeats the purpose. I'm starting to switch back to functional naming, I'm about to destroy and rebuild everything so it'll be a good chance to start over and get it "right".

Might I suggest self hosting a wiki to keep track of all the hostnames and what they host? :3

Yeah, I was also planning netbox, but it's not always helpful when everything explodes, since it is on the same infra.

You, my friend, have learned the value of management infrastructure. Completely air-gapped, separate network, etc
