So Arend (and wife Anneesa) sold everything they had to move to sunny Russia and raise eight of their nine kids with “orthodox” values.

Jesus, imagine being the kid that got away.

[-] Maestro@kbin.social 18 points 10 months ago

Yeah, I wondered about the ninth kid and how (s)he's doing.

[-] wildcardology@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Must be college age and in school.

[-] Anise 65 points 10 months ago

Imagine being so afraid of people who have slightly different beliefs from you that you think moving to a dictatorship is a good idea.

[-] SlopppyEngineer@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Last I heard a lot of right wingers are perfectly okay to turn USA in a dictatorship as long as Trump would be the dictator. You can already hear the "but I thought he was going to protect us, not (many things possible here) "

[-] ours@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

My idiot barber because he read in some newspaper rag that "kids won't be able to call their parents mom/dad" (my guess is that schools won't use the the terms mom/dad in their correspondence to be more inclusive).

I wished him good luck and I hope he really likes AKs as he's sent straight to the front as cannon fodder for little dear Putin.

He was obviously not entirely serious but was certainly swallowing some bullshit provoked outrage.

From my time lurking in r/AskARussian I remember quite a lot of these types, convinced that Russia was a paradise of freedom and conservatism, and that moving there would be a piece of cake. What's horrible about this couple is that they've quite possibly fucked up their children's lives, especially once they get to military age.

[-] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 47 points 10 months ago

Nah, stay there. In fact, take the rest of the christfacists with you.

[-] OtakuAltair@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Why? The church's influence and power has already increased far too much since Gorbachev illegally dissolutioned the USSR.

If anything, they should take the rest of the chrisfascists out of Russia with them. That'd be great.

[-] NotAtWork@startrek.website 25 points 10 months ago

Don't want them in Russia, don't want them in America, should just meat in the middle... of the Pacific ocean.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Whatever happened to "Warda"?

Basically you give people a year to evacuate, then after that you gate off Florida, allow people to take any guns they want in and enforce their own laws personally, as they please. Whatever happens, happens, it's Warda afterall...

Disney may need a private military, and an ingress lane from the sea... but they got money.

[-] psycho_driver@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

"Escape from Disney Island" to complete the trilogy.

[-] WetBeardHairs@lemmy.ml 3 points 10 months ago

If we ever needed a sequal its now.

[-] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Here’s the answer

[-] crazybrain@lemmy.spacestation14.com 2 points 10 months ago

Pacific ocean

I just had a look at a globe and I think the middle would be actually the Arctic ocean.

[-] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Let them build colonies on all those mountains their mustard seed of faith will surely cast into the sea!

[-] OtakuAltair@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Fair compromise. I can take that.

[-] Lath@kbin.social 46 points 10 months ago

To be happy at other people's misfortune is not ok.
That being said, hah! Dumbasses!

[-] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 32 points 10 months ago

To be happy at other people's misfortune is not ok.

I honestly don't think this applies here. This is a direct result of their own actions. No one forced them.

To me this is a case of: You reap what you sow.

[-] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 35 points 10 months ago

its those brainwashed children that are the real victims in this story

[-] Lath@kbin.social 11 points 10 months ago

It's ok. Russian state is going to take them in, train them for a few years at an undisclosed location and then send them back to their original country where they can run for office or something.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 5 points 10 months ago

Or they'll get pulled off the street & mobilized, later being fed thru a meat grinder somewhere in eastern Ukraine.

[-] Lath@kbin.social 1 points 10 months ago

Still worthy of pity and serve as a life lesson.

[-] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 5 points 10 months ago

Still worthy of pity

Not from me. They are adults, they made their bed. Their children are the real victims.

[-] livus@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

Yes. Any schadenfreude I may have felt if they'd been alone evaporated when I saw 8 children are being dragged through this.

[-] Th4tGuyII@kbin.social 4 points 10 months ago

True, I'd never laugh at some that got done in by life - but they made their own bed doing something obviously stupid, so I have no qualms laughing

[-] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

This a clear case of leopards eating faces. Feel free to laugh all you want at their misfortune.

[-] don@lemm.ee 43 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

It’d be a shame if someone deepfaked a video using their voice and facial data into a glowing testimonial of how great Russia is, with detailed steps about how other dutiful, god-fearing conservatives can get in on and take full advantage of the amazing opportunity for financial independence that awaits them in glorious Russia.

[-] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 27 points 10 months ago

Russia, if you're listening, this might be a good plan to get more fodder for the front lines in your "special military operation" in Ukraine. They think they're good fighters too. Win bigly.

[-] Jaysyn@kbin.social 22 points 10 months ago

Putin isn't going to let any potential meat for his grinder out. Better hope he loses faster.

Else, you're fucked fash, & I love that for you.

[-] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago

Lives in the US: this place sucks, we want it to be more like Russia.

Moves to Russia: this place sucks, it’s exactly what we wanted, but we aren’t in charge.

Moves back to US: let’s make this place more like Russia except people like us are in charge.

[-] BottleOfAlkahest@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago
[-] andyburke@fedia.io 1 points 10 months ago

The same refrain works well in all western countries: conservatives get mad if you take their power to control others away, so they look to fascism.

[-] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 10 months ago

man, this is such a shitshow, I'm almost tempted to subscribe to their channel.

Almost.

[-] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 16 points 10 months ago

I mean, if they're in Russia and speaking out about being unhappy to be there, how long before something really interesting happens on their channel? I would expect one of three things: they walk back their statement and say that they're actually happy there, a worldstar shitshow video goes up, or silence. It kinda makes sense to pay attention to this to see what Russia's response is.

[-] moody@lemmings.world 7 points 10 months ago

If you read the article, you would have seen that this has already been explained.

The husband has made a video apologizing, and the video of his wife complaining has been deleted. It sounds like they have nothing, are totally broke, and the government is upset at them. They're super fucked.

[-] magnetosphere@kbin.social 9 points 10 months ago

First, according to the family, the Russian bank where they moved the proceeds from selling their farm and belongings? It immediately froze their assets.

The parents (but not the kids) deserve it. They’re also doing a great job of showing their kids what extremist ideology gets you.
