I have a couple times! Both times it was a lot of fun. We did drinks in rounds where everyone got the same drink. That way I wasn't stuck making drinks the entire time. But I think the biggest thing is making sure there is plenty of water and food. Tiki drinks can be really strong and really hit hard. We did it as an actual dinner rather than snacks, which is a great time to bring out a punch!
Dinner and rounds of drinks is a good idea!
For my first luau, I bought some bamboo poles and cheap thatch and turned the kitchen into a tiki bar. Put some torches outside, string lights all over, made a few decorations, got an exotica playlist going, and put out Hawaiian food. Pre-batches a few gallons of mai tai, and it was a ton of fun.
Not a great photo, but it's the only one I've got of the kitchen.
Very cool!
Tiki
Description: Tiki culture is a celebration of tropical escapism. It's a longing for the time when Pacific islands were still exotic locales that inspired Donn Beach and Trader Vic to create their own versions back home. It all started in 1934 with the first Don the Beachcomber tiki restaurant, and was rejuvenated in the mid-90's with the printing of The Book of Tiki by Sven Kirsten. Pull up a chair, sip your Mai Tai, and study the tsantsa-covered ceiling while listening to the sounds of the Hukilau.
What is tiki: Things that are tiki: Tiki mugs. Tiki bars. Tiki cocktails. Aloha shirts. Luaus. Witco. Oceanic Arts. South Pacific culture. Trader Vic's. Don The Beachcomber. Martin Denny. Les Baxter. Mai Tais.
