Just today I had the lovely situation to get an ad break during two podcast episodes on Spotify mobile (Android).
Changing the track does work but the ad break stays. BUT I could fast forward the ad.

I pay fucking Family Prem. for that shit. WTF?!
@The Haters: No, this was not a baked in ad by the podcast hoster but literally inserted by Spotify.

[-] themurphy@lemmy.world 44 points 10 months ago

Yeah, Spotify made that deal with podcasts. They wanted them on their platform so bad, that they fucked every single paying customer they have.

I have Spotify Premium Duo, and it's the same thing on podcasts.

[-] burble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 10 months ago

I switched to AntennaPod for podcasts because of this. It's also just a better experience - it auto downloads new episodes and deletes them after playing.

[-] deweydecibel@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

Podcast Addict has been able to do this forever.

[-] Palindromes@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Absolute favorite podcast app! Highly recommend

[-] Empricorn@feddit.nl 2 points 10 months ago

I love Podcast Addict, but I don't think you can set the sort per podcast. I want my entertainment ones to be oldest->newest and the reverse for things like news.

[-] acid_falcon@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

You definitely can. Podcast Addict has per podcast override settings

[-] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

I was about to comment this! I learned about that app from a few Lemmy users recommending it, and it's the real deal. Podcasts still generally have ads inserted in (which you can fast forward through), BUT I learned that you can set rules for your subscriptions which apply to each episode, like "skip the first 45s of each episode". Go to subscriptions, tap the settings gear wheel, and find auto skip!

Spotify doesn’t do that?? That’s like feature #0 on a podcast app

[-] TheMinions@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Is there anything like this for iOS? I usually stick to Overcast but haven’t really looked into switch apps for a while.

[-] Lemonparty@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago

No, this was not a baked in ad by the podcast hoster but literally inserted by Spotify.

Just FYI, those two things don't need to be exclusive. In this case Spotify is probably the one sponsoring the podcast, and so they inserted ads themselves, as opposed to the content creators including their sponsor ads. Many more successful podcasts are doing this now, and it seems like the ads get shoved in when there sometimes aren't even breaks.

Not saying it doesn't suck, it absolutely does. Just pointing out that it's a new trend. So it'll probably get worse!

[-] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 10 months ago

As this was the WAN show by LTT I doubt that. At least the sponsoring.

[-] Lemonparty@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Yeah, unfortunately could just be (probably is) good ol' enshittification then. In this case at least.

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 2 points 10 months ago

Spotify inserts their own ads into every podcast, regardless of whether you have premium or not. Then on top of that the podcasters themselves usually insert either ads or sponsorships into it too. I've seen countless podcasts do this now. In the worst cases that feels something like this: ad (by spotify) > introduction and depending on the podcaster potentially ads there too > barely any content > sponsorship > barely any content > ad (by spotify) > barely any content > podcast break and either sponsorship or ads by the podcaster > repeat for 2nd half

[-] Lemonparty@lemm.ee 9 points 10 months ago

Genuine question - why does anyone listen to podcasts on Spotify? There have been and still are a TON of quality podcast apps that are 100% free and don't do this bullshit. Like, I'm aware Spotify has podcasts but in my mind Spotify is music, podcast app is podcasts. It was that way for more than a decade. I just don't get it TBH.

[-] Baku@aussie.zone 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I briefly listened to podcasts on Spotify til I realised they inserted ads despite me being a paying member. I don't really listen to podcasts at all anymore, but when I do I usually listen to YouTube ones since adblock + sponsorblock = zero ads and interruptions

[-] Lemonparty@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

Makes a lot more sense. I don't listen to very many but when I do I use an app that isn't Spotify. I don't mind fast forwarding the commercials in the app. I have no desire to have Spotify try and algorithm my podcast tastes, especially not on top of injecting extra ads into them

[-] ginerel@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

Probably they just want to use the same app they're using for listening to music. Although I also have them both. And I love AntennaPod more for podcasts, plus there's no tracking, and it's just a different experience overall.

[-] Lemonparty@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago

Seems weird to me in a day and age where switching apps is literally just a swipe of a finger. People will jump from Instagram to tik tok to texting to emailing to Whatsapp without thinking about it at all, but a podcast app is a hurdle they don't want to deal with. Even more bizarre because until very recently it was always like that, for the entire history of podcasts. It's a shame too because podcast apps are so intuitive these days. Listening to podcasts on Spotify feels clunky by comparison.

To each their own I guess, but I personally just don't understand it.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 45 points 10 months ago

Don't use DoubleDouble.top. Many of its tracks are YouTube rips.

Use one of these websites instead. Every single tune is available in 320Kbps MP3 and FLAC. No rips nor re-encoding:

If you want an app for your phone, Soulseek has done me absolute wonders. Shockingly it's on the Google play store. It requires an account, but the app automatically makes you one when you use it iirc.

[-] Emerald@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Are you talking about Seeker?

[-] SpiceDealer@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

How about for full album downloads?

[-] brb@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago

First site is dead or link is broken

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

It goes down all the time. It'll be back.

[-] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 27 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

This is great but is there something like this that let's you upload a spotify playlist and buy that list drm free? I'm willing to pay if it means actual ownership

*Oh wait I didn't see what sub this was

[-] Apollo2323@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago

Lol hahaha are you a fellow pirate or nah?

[-] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 15 points 10 months ago

I'm not against it but it's not my first choice personally

[-] Apollo2323@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

Yeah sometime there is no other option.

[-] Hominine@lemmy.world 24 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

While we are here, does anyone know of an open source implementation of a recommendation algorithm? I currently pay for YTM for my family and while it is the Bee's Knees now, I can see the coming enshittification and would like to start planning ahead. Thanks!

[-] LazerDickMcCheese@sh.itjust.works 27 points 10 months ago

I've seen a few recommendations for ListenBrainz lately, but I haven't tried it yet so I can't say

[-] PropaGandalf@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago
[-] myrmidex@slrpnk.net 10 points 10 months ago

I second this, very nice indeed!

I also use their Picard software to check the downloaded album, then it updates the metadata automatically and places them in the appropriate folder structure.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago

It's good for similar artist recommendations, but I typically prefer looking for music by similar track. There's not a way to do this with brainz is there? I'm pretty happy with Tidal's feature for this but always looking for others.

[-] myrmidex@slrpnk.net 1 points 10 months ago

no indeed, I don't think it's that specific. I mainly browse the weekly exploration playlist, based on my listens, which either recommends other of my favorite songs that I hadn't listened yet, or unknown songs that usually fit my styles. Enough for me to cut the subscriptions 🥳

[-] Tippon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 10 months ago

I didn't know that it could arrange the music too. That would have been really handy a few years ago >.<

[-] kumatomic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 months ago

Same. Just finished organizing 8000 flacs the hard way which may not be a lot, but it sure felt like it.. lol

[-] Hominine@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago
[-] JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl 7 points 10 months ago

Hmmm. What is the catch? Seems like a honeypot a little bit.

[-] UnRelatedBurner@sh.itjust.works 17 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

double double is in c/piracy(this)'s megathread, so there's that.

[-] netburnr@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

The catch is its time consuming since it doesn't support Playlist. There are similar tools that also support up to 100nsong Playlist.

[-] GluWu@lemm.ee 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Yeah, the tools I use for playlists grabs whatever is on YouTube. I haven't found a mobile option to download full playlists from a not YouTube source.

[-] useful_idiot@lemmy.eatsleepcode.ca 7 points 10 months ago

I found double double website to be janky to download anything larger than 1gb (flac off tidal). I now use https://github.com/nathom/streamrip and haven't looked back!
