My daughter just showed me a picture that had the words "Jay AF" written on it. I know what "AF" means, but what's the "Jay" mean? She went to a cirque du solil show and wrote it on a pic of some shirtless guys twirling around.

Any help from someone more hip than myself?

Jay is a person, and the picture that was written on invokes the same feeling that this Jay does, the picture is Jay AF.

I'm going to just assume it's Jay Mohr. He's dreamy.

i would guess theres a boy at her school who fits into that picture for her.

Jay is more than likely a person, because I don't think the kids are trying to bring back the old slang "jay" which was a somewhat derogatory term meaning "rube" given the context here.

TIL the word rube

a somewhat derogatory term meaning “rube”

Also where the term "jaywalking" comes from.

Never heard it myself, but Urban Dictionary says it's an actually amazing person.

Whenever you look up names on urban dictionary you have to remember it's mostly middle schoolers trying to boost their own ego or signal to others that they're hot

[-] cheese_greater@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Doesn't it say that about every name?

[-] FireTower@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

Sometimes you see one written by someone who hates a person with that name.

My wild guess: “Jay” stands for “Jordans”, that is, a pair of shoes which are deemed to be very cool by most kids.

So, “Jay AF” could mean “cool as fuck”.

You must be goking.

[-] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

It's "jif" not "gif"

[-] ALERT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 years ago

I won't blame them for that!

[-] Geek_King@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

I've most frequently seeing AF mean "As fuck". It's even gotten to the point of bumper stickers that say things like "Mommy AF". Outside that meaning, I'm not sure what else AF could mean.

Did you just not read the post?

I know what "AF" means

[-] Geek_King@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

My apologizes, apparently I failed my reading comprehension check.

[-] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

AF means "as fuck" I think, I'm not sure what else it could mean

Cirque du soleil*

Jay, obviously, is a person who isn’t from the city — hence the term, Jaywalking! JK, but that is a real thing. It’s probably not the real answer here.
