Wix Alternatives (piefed.ca)

Looking for an alternative website hoster & builder. Not something in USA for various reasons including southern data centres having a tendency to run their machines using fossil fuels instead of the much cleaner energy we have here in Canada.

https://crocweb.com/ is a Canadian company (based in Cornwall, ON, datacentre in Montreal).

I have accounts with them for Drupal and WordPress hosting. They migrated everything over from the previous (American) hosting company with little fuss. I agree with other responses that these things are much more complex than a sitebuilder. CrocWeb has a sitebuilder (called SitePad) as well, but I haven't used it so I can't tell you how capable it is.

I have had excellent experience with their sales and technical support, and their prices are very reasonable (starting at just over USD $1/month).

Web Hosting Canada (WHC.ca) is a Canadian company in Montreal with hosting in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver) for as little as $3.89/mo (on a three year term, renews at $6.99/mo) using their own AI website builder called Sitejet, built by WHC, and powered by hydroelectric renewable energy. There are a few Canadian-owned registrars who also offer webhosting. For example, Web Hosting Canada supports Wordpress and Drupal, among other website software.

Imo as long as the software is FOSS it's not a big deal if the company behind it isn't Canadian or that great... as long as you aren't giving that company money or data.

Same. It’s going to be hard finding a similar company that offers the same setup as wix though I use it for my own company and it unfortunately had everything I need.

I’ll be watching this space though and jump to something better if it’s there and either in Canada or over in Europe.

Something easy as Wix or Squarespace.

Drupal are pretty good guys imo, but not the same easiness (cannot speak for their various hosting services).

WordPress.. I get mixed opinions about being a responsible company and ease of use.

If someone is coming from Wix, I absolutely do not recommend Drupal. Not that Drupal is bad (it's what I prefer), but it is very, very much more involved than Wix. Wix is for simplicity. Drupal is for control.

Don't bother with WordPress... its not an easy site builder. You would still need a paid software (Elementor, DIVI, Beaver Builder, etc) to do the building.

Also, the WordPress CEO is a big poopie head.
