Stupid clickbait title and thumbnail aside, they’ve been saying the same about each generation since at least when I was at school.
This might not be popular but we kinda blew it on educating these kids, never gave teachers the resources they need to correct that, and theyre growing up into a world that sucks to inherit
My cynicism was WILD as a teenager (i mean it still is but it was then too) because I was growing up into a world full of problems that I was watching not get solved: climate crisis, housing crisis, wage stagnation, enshittification...
These kids are inheriting a garbage bag full of sports betting and wildfire smoke. They have nowhere to hang out, the places they could hang out are expensive, the childhood we had and our parents had isnt available to them even if youre trying.
Plus theyre now growing up with AI conditioning almost a learned helplessness because you dont have to think anymore. You dont have to look for your answer, but the answer isnt correct a lot of the time and nobody is telling them that because theyre surrounded by shit telling them AI is the future and media literacy is shot
Parents too busy to engage, kids relying on the ais and search to do the thinking for them, everyone thinking the schools will sort the kids out and that theyll just 'figure it out'. Politicians and socmed filling their heads with entitlement, instant gratification and shitty values.
Not surprising at all. The system has failed them.
My experience in the classroom last year was that the kids in grades 7-9 were terrible discipline problems (most likely due to COVID).
The younger ones are better behaved, but are learning far less than kids used to. Reading is a particular problem.
Get rid of tech and go back to books like sweeden

There are so many factors here. Ultra-comoetitive school environments, a terrible funding model that disproportionately benefits students from wealthy families and neighborhoods, an "all in" approach to technology, corporate driven testing, textbook, and curriculum development, parenting trends, the breakdown of our wider social ecosystems, internet culture, and teachers that are not being properly trained and compensated to teach, that aren't actually qualified to be educators (teaching is its own skillset, you might be the best person in your field of expertise, that doesn't mean you could teach anyone else).
It's like a perfect storm of bad decisions. It's not the fault of the people trying to actually help these kids for the most part. Every part of the system is designed to fail everyone involved.
