Wet grass? (lemmy.world)

Trying a more detailed view of water droplets. How did I do?

It looks very good, particularly compared to the woman's face you posted before.

The only critiques I have are on the droplets on top and to the back right of the leaf. They don't have enough weight to them. They are almost spherical with their bottom point barely touching the leaf (one actually looking like it sits directly on another droplet which isn't realistic), rather than the deformed base of the other droplets on top. Moreover they allow the colors from the background to come through with too little interaction with the droplet illumination. It looks like there is very little between the background and the observer instead of a lense of water. It makes them look like soap bubbles instead of water. Light and hollow.

But, again, the rest of the droplets look great. A great improvement. Good job, dude.

Thank you!

I'm really struggling to find references where other people have tackled this type of painting that's between realism and impressionism. Either they skip the detail all together or just replicate a photograph.

It's exciting and hard at the same time lol 🤣

Everyone has good advice but I'd like to remind you this is awesome. Can't wait to see it all improve like everything else you've done here though. Majorly impressive

Seconded. It's like weeks of improvement between images. You inspire me, @BallShapedMan@lemmy.world!

That's so kind! Thank you.

And now I know how to tag people! I've been wondering how to do it for years and never could do it right 🤣.

I'm old... Technology is getting hard. I need a vcr to yell at.

That is a tough challenge. I like your images and am always impressed by your approach to them. With the water droplets, I noticed that—despite the light reflections—they still distort the background behind them. Just like a lens does. The closer the droplet is to the viewer, the more clearly this effect is visible. Out of curiosity, I took photos of droplets on my plants for comparison. In your shots, the reflections seem a bit too flat (?)—they don't seem to distort the background behind them. But that’s really just nitpicking at a high level. At the same time, it helps to simply talk about it. 🙂

I think your issue may be quantity of droplets, Ballshapedman. They look good otherwise!

And size maybe? If they aren't using a photo reference, I feel like the small droplets wouldn't be there because they'd get sucked into the bigger ones

I like it. The droplets on the underside feel weird? Not sure how to articulate that. Don't feel watery somehow.

Got it, thank you!
