I have 32GB of RAM! DDR4, though.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 13 hours ago

Same! 16, though.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 13 hours ago

Isn't this like from 2015 or something? I usually don't use chrome but when I have to I don't see anything wild.

[-] justme@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 21 hours ago

i guess currently you can cash it in for early retirement

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Are we still ok?

[-] Reygle@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

My main rig has 64 of DDR5 and my backup rig (Yes I'm that kind of fucking nerd) has 32 of DDR4.

I'm so fucking lucky I bought this hardware JUST in time.

[-] rumba@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago

My home server still has 96GB. At this rate i might shut it down and call it my retirement plan

[-] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Right over the last 5 years I think I bought about 4-5k of ram and storage. Which is a lot but I think at today's rates I could flip it for 50k. I'm extremely tempted to do so cause prices have to come down right, but knowing my luck this will all be worth 500k in a few years and I'll never be able to buy it again.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 2 points 13 hours ago

I say hoard it unless there's an emergency where you need money.

I jacked off to this scenario just now; the struggle cuddle with the Google Chrome iconogre. Would you like to hear about our lords, Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith, and myself? I also teach the occult.

Why -5? This, this is shitposting.

Hello! Holds up spork. I am Catherine, but you may refer to me as "The Penguin Which Brings Doom." As you can see I tend to behave with incredible randomness. That is why I have come to this place, to meet with random individuals such as myself.

I am 52 years old (though I still hold childlike jolly in my heart) and I like to listen to NPR talk shows with my beloved of the fairer sex (I am of bisexual persuasion, if you do not like it, I will disregard you outright) it is our favorite, as the range of topics can be varied!

She does behave with unpredictable randomness and joy too, however I would like to meet others which exhibit this sort of erratic behavior. The more the merrier, as they say!

I hope to make a lot of great new friends, so please do leave a reply to this message.

Doom. (This is me once again exhibiting my haphazard manners.)

Farewell!

With love,

Catherine, The Penguin Which Brings Doom

[-] Zizzy 4 points 1 day ago

I love this so much

[-] Reborn_Mormon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yes, the penguins of d00m bit IS very popular with the middle school demographic, but I assure you, I'm not trying to network with anyone under the age of 26.

[-] trashgirlfriend@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I guess you're lucky that Catherine is 52?

[-] Reborn_Mormon@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Who is Catherine? I want to know, in case I have put my foot in my mouth. Cuz I dunno.

Uncanny valley. Them being a lost nut seems just as plausible as it being a shitpost.

Edit: also, even of they are doing a parody, it's more of an annoying one than a funny one IMO. Seeing another one of their comments confirmed that for me.

I'm doing authentic self-performance art to promote my educational (f)art project where I teach philosophy, spirituality, and mental health skills.

This is one of my libraries:

Depending on what you do 16 might be plenty or 32 can be barely enough.

Two ~~Chrome~~ Librewolf tabs

[-] FeatherConstrictor@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

Hold on I use librewolf is it more RAM intensive than it's counterparts?

[-] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@anarchist.nexus 1 points 12 hours ago

I don't know if it's strictly more, but Firefox (and, by extension, Librewolf) does use a good amount of RAM. Also I use Librewolf too; the strikethrough is to suggest not to use Chrome.

Sometime between November 5th 2024 and Jan 20th 2025 I decided I had better replace my ailing laptop before something drove prices up. I was debating between the 32G of RAM I needed and the 64G I wanted. I am really glad I splurged back then. The way costs have gone between tariffs and AI's demand for braaainz (plus the fact that vibe coders don't make any account for efficiency or specs) it feels like I practically got it for free.

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

I'm happy both my PCs have 32 😅.

Laptop is at 16 but the expansion slot is broken so it is what it is. 16GB on linux is alright for me though.

I did splurge on a 2TB 990Pro SSD though, that I am so happy about!

[-] YoiksAndAway@piefed.zip 16 points 2 days ago

I'm still getting by with the machine I built in 2016 with what I thought was a beefy 16GB of RAM. Hopefully I can get some cheap parts and build something better after the AI bubble bursts.

[-] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

My main laptop is also 16GB. It's from 2017 and was one of the last models left that had an incorporated DVD-player. It still runs so well I have no plans to replace it. I will mourn it when it goes. It's been so hassle-free

It also has a separate input for your mic. Green for headphones, red for mic.

[-] Fredthefishlord 9 points 2 days ago

16 is fine. I still use a laptop with 4 when I'm traveling

I've got 32 of a fast ddr4 just sitting in a parts pile. Neither machine I currently use can take it.

I'm still on Windows (looking to switch) and somehow I can run AI with 16 GB to spare.

i would sell them and retire
