Hi, thanks for your comment. To be honest, I never really thought about the energy consumption before because I've been focusing more on privacy aspects. But after your comment, I did some research and came across quite a few sources like:
- UN University Report: Environmental Cost of AI
- IEA Report: Energy demand from AI
- MIT Technology Review: Making an image with generative AI uses as much energy as charging your phone
among others. This was all new information to me. So you are right. I was just happy that a privacy-focused company finally added image generation features. But everything seems to come with a price.

Holy shit why would you want this?
Hey. I really enjoy creating images. I also like writing fanfiction and combine them together. But only now have I learned that image generation consumes a lot of energy. I hadn't even thought about this until a few minutes ago. What I hoped was, simply that people would switch from ChatGPT to Protons Lumo. I guess I was too focused on privacy to think about the environment.
well that, and also the fact that image models only exist because these companies stole as many images/art etc. they could scrape off the internet and put them in these models with absolutely no payments or without the consent of the owners of these photos. The concept of AI images sounds really cool (especially for someone like me that is not an artist AT ALL) because you can generate basically anything you can think of, but you also have to think about how this technology exists in the first place, and who it hurts. I can afford to pay someone to draw for me (I have my friend drawing me as a VTuber avatar as we speak) so that's what I'll stick with.
That really makes sense. And as someone whose images have also been sold, I can tell you it truly feels good😊. So it's awesome that you're paying your friend and supporting him.
As stupid as it will sound, I had to make a 480x480 all black image as background for my smartwatch dial that had some colorful one by default and all I had at hand was my smartphone and I realized I literally don't have a single function or image editor on it that could help me make that. And it literally made me all black image of that resolution and saved me in specified output format. I rarely use Ai chatbots and if I do it's just Lumo, but it helped me with doing a very specific one off task that I'll probably not need any time soon or ever. Was it probably wasteful as whole? Sure. But me downloading 15 image editing apps, spending 1 hour testing them and deleting coz they couldn't do what I needed would probably be just as wasteful.
