I had no idea they made boats by blowing up a giant plastic balloon and crushing it in a giant smasher machine, that's amazing

What's the method named? Something about casting

[-] aeiou@piefed.social 15 points 1 month ago

This is blow molding, more common for soda bottles. Closed-top boats like kayaks are typically rotomolded instead.

Squirt some liquid hot plastic into a closed mold and rotate it to coat the inside while it cools.

[-] Gonzako@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

How do you control for thickness there?

[-] rainwall@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Likely amount of liquid and amount of rotation.

Transmutation, probably.

Thought it might be conjuration at first, but that's creating stuff from nothing rather than reshaping matter..

Oh, that's not the kind of casting you mean? Carry on, then ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป

Definitely transmutation.

I'd rather it be done via thaumaturgy with a blind, wizened master sitting nearby shaping a tiny version as his family has done for centuries.

I wish engineering was just this all the time and not designing weapons for "defense" contractors ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I want to be the nail magnet guy. So satisfying.

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

That one really called to me also. I'm not sure why.

[-] HeartyOfGlass@piefed.social 7 points 1 month ago

I hear Factorio calling...

The roller and the guy with the shovel jabbing it underneath was making me anxious

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago

The way it was spinning it looks like it would have kicked it out, rather than pull it in. Looked almost counterintuitive.

that 3d stamp boob used to be so expensive. it probably still is.
