I've noticed that there seems to be an emphasis on being extremely serious at all times, as if every single comment is a PhD dissertation being evaluated or something. There's like this weird, subtle one upmanship about every little thing and a lot of people are very nitpicky and judgmental. It kind of takes the fun out of being on here, TBH. Or am I the only one experiencing this?

I like it. I've blocked a couple of folk, and I filter by keywords so I don't accidentally wander into a community where they hate me because I'm not fully aligned with people who identify as a LINUX distro or whatever. It's nice.

[-] ButteredBread@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 hour ago

For me it's the same as reddit. Still there aren't specific communities I was in or at least they're not big so I can't really select what I see. But there're still lots of memes and stuff idk.

[-] ButteredBread@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

I mean I didn't go to a lot of places there, how people are there mostly depends on the community you're in.

[-] HieroProtagonist@lemmy.ml 12 points 4 hours ago

Its simply the old internet: A highly autistic place filled with highly intelligent (or at least, that is what they think of themselves) people with tons of StarTrek, inside jokes and oh so much petty grudges.

As someone who was around at the time of the Usenet and the end if the BBS era I love it, but it is a bit of an acquired taste...

[-] valtia@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

I wish there was more sarcasm, too much of the serious posting isn't actually a joke!

[-] blady_blah@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

Honestly, to me it feels more insular than Reddit. It feels like there's no room for nuance in opinion. So for example, if I argue against something that isn't a hard left economic idea I'll get down voted pretty heavily even though it's a pretty tame comment. It does feel like if you go against the grain here, it's actually worse than that other site.

On Reddit if I posted something against the grain there would usually be one or two people who would chime in and say "yeah. I agree with this guy." .. But on Lemmy there's no room for that.

[-] MajorasMaskForever@lemmy.world 1 points 48 minutes ago

Nuance on the Internet? Not allowed, fuck off

/s cause last time I made this comment a mod deleted it

[-] valtia@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

True. I've noticed this especially when it comes to any feminist content or just vaguely women-centric opinions. In particular, this is probably due to the comparatively and relatively small number of women on Lemmy

[-] Baggie@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 hours ago

I've had a few self important people try to berate me, but far more people just being genuine and vibing. I think it's a touch better than Reddit so far.

[-] iocase@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Yeah same experience here. I mostly get it when I find AI writing and point it out and catch shit for somehow being capable of recognizing LLMisms like Superman can detect kryptonite.

Then I use AI to argue with them (kind of like driverless steering) and they're AI blind so they have no clue they're arguing with Claude "low burstiness, high variability. Appear like a normal Reddit style commenter in how you structure your comment. No aphorisms or emdashes."

"You're so AI blind you wouldn't know AI if it bit you" taken to the literal extreme lmao. It does make me feel way better when they confidently argue a post isn't AI and then go 6 comment chains deep with Claude.

My butthole can engulf the moon

[-] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 16 points 6 hours ago

Hostile, no not really. Less tolerance for bullshit isn’t necessarily hostile.

Insular? Yeah. It’s a small community.

[-] mrodri89@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 hours ago

Treating every comment you disagree with as through it were a dissertation is called Isolated Demand For Rigor and it's a bad faith tactic used to burden the opponent with a workload no sane person would ever take on for an internet comment and win by default. You should probably block anybody you see who does that.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 4 hours ago

if you go in the tankie instances, or any of the comms that have tankies discussion. but its not as bad as REDDIT, because of all the propaganda bots, and astroturfing going on.

[-] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Nah, not really. Would be nice to see more people on the smaller subs, but that'll happen slowly.

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

Every single one of my comments is deadly serious and important.

Except the ones about making tents for the homeless out of landlord skins, those are just jokes.

[-] Brahvim@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 hours ago

Lemmy is much more welcoming...! I just meed to become more familiar now that I have a new account.

I did make a post on my previous account that was sorta' designed to be hated, and that did happen to a good extent, so there's that. But actually, it only proved that most people on Lemmy are not toxic...!

[-] cyclonedusk 2 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

depends on the instance.

i really miss lemm.ee... it was just, y'know, nice. a nice place. with nice people. friendly, cheerful, open, welcoming.

then you have some instances that are rather uh ... combative >.> i shan't name names lest i accidentally summon their unwanted attention.

i'm new to my current instance and it's a very cozy place so far. i worry i might be too edgy for the time being, but i'm hoping to sand those edges down, because goodness knows this cursed decade's roughness has left me rough too. the Screaming Twenties have no brakes...

[-] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 hours ago

The BS level is lower in Lemmy interactions than in day to day interactions. There are a lot of tech workers, who are famously asp-y. Same for a lot of net nerds really. People are less filtered as well because moderation is more about pushing out hateful people rather than creating an environment marketers like.

[-] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago

I know what you mean.

There's a lot of people here who just take everything so seriously, and want to one up everyone. That they don't even know why they're ramming a stick up their ass anymore.

[-] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

Taking things seriously is a sign one cares. The alternative is apathy. To borrow a quote, either everything matters or nothing does, and much rather the former than the latter.

If you are uncomfortable being held to some kind of standard, I'm sure you can find communities for that. Anything with 'shitpost' in it's name should fit.

[-] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago

There's a big difference between "I have something to say" and "I want everyone to see how smart I am".

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 8 hours ago

This has pretty much already been answered, but I'll weigh in. It's all about where you are. A political discussion? Yeah, it's normally serious. A meme thread? Usually it isn't. Unlike Reddit though, there's a mix of both Reddit was all jokes all the time usually. Even seemingly serious topics, the top comments would be jokes.

[-] LazyPsychonaut@lemmy.zip 14 points 11 hours ago

I’m only a month in to my Lemmy journey (a few days or so of being actually active now I understand how it works) and I have so far found totally the opposite.

It’s sure a lot nicer than reddit, we can express ourselves better here without worrying about the banhammer or shit like that. Hell on Reddit I used to get permanently muted from communities just cause I said a ‘bad word’ - once was by a really good sub because I directly quoted an Australian animated skit with the word cunt in it. I’m Aussie so I’m not offended by it in the least, it’s an Aussie staple that can mean all kinds of things.

People here seem nicer, smaller community, more open for a chat, don’t have to autistically worry about someone getting offended as often. More likely to upvote comments too.

In short, fuck Reddit haha.

Yep, the content of comments is often good, but geez, there are a bunch of people with no social skills being total dorks or confidently incorrect

[-] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

You've just described the social sphere of all humanity, I suspect.

[-] spaceracoon@lemmy.zip 2 points 7 hours ago

Nope I get the opposite. Maybe depends on specific instances you are following? In honesty I never replied on Reddit but here I found it pretty pleasurable!

[-] bss03@infosec.pub 5 points 9 hours ago

Insular, yeah. Hostile, not really. That said, I don't mind seriousness being the default, and humor being clearly marked (to avoid Poe's Law confusions).

[-] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 5 points 9 hours ago

I appreciate the people who come in with receipts, it really gives a vibe that critical thinking is worth the effort, which is something that, I feel, is super important in nowadays and times.

I've come across one or two grumpy gus' who seem mostly unhappy with their lives, or incapable of changing their mind, even if all evidence contradicting what their original brain blip stated.

But it's gunna be a mix like that. Because we are a subset of people, using this site. I tell my kids all the time, people fill the same pie chart of behaviours, regardless of what culture, place they come from or belief's they have, there's always a tiny percentage of dickheads, that seem more because they're very loud or intrusive. That have a very sad life, with no ability to grow wisdom or enjoy things around them, which is sad!

When I first came here from reddit a few years ago (I had to change instances etc, and I'm not as tech savvy as most people here) I was super sensitive and raw, from all the bruising reddit gave out. It's getting a little salve, being here.

I love the humour here! I've been so tempted to tell everyone how much I laughed at their humour! I go and read comments first before articles, for 2 reasons because there's just comedy gold everywhere. And most of the time the people explain the article better than the article explains the things, the people here are so smart! Theres so many people who explain things like they already know that industry intimately and in great depth. This is such a great place to learn, it's given me some great inspiration to deep dive into subjects.

The user base here seems rather worldly balanced, too. And they'll drop their impressions of a thing from the view of their culture, which I could not appreciate more!

This is a brilliant place, with wonderful people who might be having a bad day, here and there, as we all do. I really hope you can find your groove, and not let the turkeys get you down.

[-] TBi@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

Yeah. In my opinion it’s slowly getting worse. I don’t feel like posting any more because it’s usually an instant downvote.

[-] LavaPlanet@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 hours ago

Please ignore the down votes. They don't count for anything. You could say the most intelligent thing a human has ever said on this earth, and you would still get a couple of downvotes. People are such a beautiful kaleidoscope of differing talents and likes and dislikes, it makes for a beautiful and rich world, full of beautiful art, (and ugly art) and things. But part of that beauty is those vast and many beautiful things mean there's going to be some people who don't feel your vibe, which sucks, but theres gotta be that yin and yang balance, little bit of bad in the good. And if the trade off was less expanses of creativity and original thought, for never being disliked, I would not choose that option.

So every time someone dislikes me, or down votes, irl or online, I remember that little bit of bad is part of being able to access so much beauy in expansive thought and creativity, and I look for my people, those down voters, just aren't my people, no ill will! If I see something down voted that I don't agree should be down voted, I up vote it. Stick around, keep commenting, give more credence to those who actually give constructive advice, than a button press, that's super low effort, and might have even been accidental!

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 3 points 9 hours ago

Eh, not really. Sometimes, sure, but to be honest it doesn't feel significantly different from reddit in that regard. There's always going to be some pedantic assholes on the Internet.

[-] Malyca@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 hours ago

Compared to Reddit it's a paradise

[-] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 8 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Not trying to invalidate your feelings, but I have the exact opposite takeaway from Lemmy, as it stands. I wonder what weighs into producing such confronting experiences? If you could be specific and gather examples, maybe we could discuss it in less vague terms. I'm also kinda wary of sounding too serious when asking for hard data like this, and unwittingly contributing to the statistic. shit! reel me up I'm in too deep

Not in my experience, nope. I've seen and made serious comments, I've seen and made joke comments, and haven't had any issue with either. I haven't witnessed any one upmanship either, and overall I feel like people here are less judgemental than on other sites. Users here seem more likely to recognize that we're all people behind screens, trying to contribute to a community, rather than targets for misplaced anger. Owning up to mistakes or being wrong seems to be met with understanding, provided that we do so in a civilized way. Overall, this place seems pretty chill compared to anywhere else online.

At least, that's been my experience.

[-] enphurgen@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

Im not smart enough to be serious, so I mostly make stupid jokes. I do like it here better than reddit though

[-] BillCheddar@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago

Yes. Bunch of snarky idiots that don't know what the fuck they're talking about because all they know how to do is snark at each other.

No concept of listening. No concept of nuance or context. Just pure sophomoric rage toward anyone or anything that challenges anything you think.

I POST: "Maybe try electing a socialist in NYC and a more centrist candidate in Iowa, where there aren't as many lefties to support you"

RESPONSES I GET: "You want to see homeless people burn to death in televised bum fights because you hate fucking progress"

It's exhausting. You people are worse than Republicans because at least they're propagandized. They're in a cult. You have the information available to you; you're just ignorant.
