This must be some deep Lemmy lore that I am not privy to...
He was an incredibly prolific poster. Unfortunately I found him to be rather abrasive, I don't recall any particular interaction but I do get an "oh yeah, that guy. Glad he's not been around much lately" sense when I see that name.
I'm glad they were around because they were singlehandedly posting an obscene amount which really helped lemmy not feel like a ghost town back then.
But, they clearly had mental health issues. No healthy person would post whatever he was doing... probably ~~1000 posts a day~~ (did the math: 100 posts avg per day. One post every 14 minutes for 2 years straight). Considering HOW unwell they were, they were relatively good natured. But you could see thier worldview was rooted in pretty serious personal issues.
They were tedious, and frustrating, condescending, and a know it all. Absolutely couldn't admit they were wrong... not even admit that weren't perfectly right. But... they weren't ok.
I was glad when they disappeared, but mostly because I was really hoping they had been intervention-d by loved ones. To go cold turkey one day must have been BRUTAL for them.
All in all I think he was the right person at the right time. Thier faults actually DROVE engagement, which was important for a blossoming platform. I don't think anything they said or did was out of malice.
A complicated person. I really hope they're doing better.
damn that is a great eulogy
What I took away from this: social media platforms apparently feed, cause, and thrive from metal health pathologies.
There is such a tiny proportion of users that actually interact with social media by posting, commenting etc, but a large proportion of them are completely nuts, myself included
Was he the one who had like a mental breakdown and moved to the UK and then stopped posting entirely?
He moved to the UK to escape the Trump regime since his daughter is LGBTQ, a decision that I think turned out to be a good one at this point.
How dare you post this without any link @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world
Edit: Looks a bit different today, how could have a last post 2 years ago in the OP but have a last post here just over 1 year ago?

OP might have news@lemmy.world or the instance lemmy.world blocked. That would prevent those posts from showing in the feed.
For me squid's last post is one about belugas mimicking human speec.
That guy did 68.5k comments in ~1.5 years. WTF? That's like ~140 comments per day.
Anyone ever figure out what happened to them?
They're not active here, but they're still active on Bluesky.
oh. well that's good to know then!
glad i don't have to feel a weird pang of "uh oh wha happen"
I'm glad they're doing ok. I actually didn't mind their drama at all, they just had a bad string of things going on in their life. I recall them moving to Europe (or saying they were) at some point and then gone.
I'm glad he's okay!
They were a part of our history, but all good things must come to an end. I’m glad they’re in a better mental state now.
I miss their work on the OOCC comics sublemmy.
There's no way it's been two years
That's because it has actually been 1.3 years
I don’t understand the reference.
I really thought I recognized all of the big posters around here but I don’t recall this guy at all.
Who now? 😅
Basically a serial shitposter for a few years. Came over during/before the whole Reddit API migration.
I also remember a lot of left leaning (duh) political memes and a fair amount of posts about how doctors couldn’t figure out his ability to swallow food or some such.
Because of that, FlyingSquid was unemployed and posted in a lot of communities daily and would comment frequently as well.
He didn't just shitpost.
