Didn't know the word.

It stems from Japan and looked like this:

US: why not use a bigger table with longer legs and put a gas grill in the middle?

Not sure if I'm right. Search results where sparse. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The one in the US is based on teppanyaki. You sit at a table with a large metal griddle while someone cooks for you in a very performative way. Usually squirting sake in your mouth and shooting fire out of onions.

I think in the U.S.A. it is usually the latter nowadays, where a cook also preps dishes for you? With a grill plate in the middle made out of sheet metal.

The former is traditionally japanese
