I read the article and I still don't understand why?
The same reason as to why have a fully foss vs closed sauce operating system. The main OS is just one thing, but lots of bits run their code ("OS") too, like BIOS, on-CPU-low-level-code, etc - networking & storage firmware is also important to have some control over ("be yours bcs you bought it"), otherwise you have to just trust what the megacorp said it does & does not do (+security).
