Very briefly tested the AppImage. It complained that my dump of the game wasn’t a supported version (SHA-1 hash mismatch), but the intro ran. For more I would have had to plug in a gamepad.

Already shared my thoughts on games@lemmy.world, but I am playing on Linux, so:

Been playing this, and it's great! Started right up at 9x resolution, wasn't too hard to setup a high quality texture pack, and the game is looking sharp at 4k/120 without any issues!

Things look great, and this launching with features like gyro aim, free cam, and QoL like fast climbing and skipping that damn rupee cutscene is phenomenal.

Also, man, can't wait to come back to this in a year or two with a randomizer and whatever other features they can pack in here.

Got a link (ha!) to that 4k Texture Pack?

Haha, I figured some folks would be looking, so I already made another comment with a little guide!

I agree, it's looking fantastic so far. Dual-stick controls is so much nicer than the weird c-stick for first person thing. BTW do you know if there's a way to get the shader version of the texture pack working? I assume there isn't but thought I'd ask.

[-] Hazzard@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago

Don't think so! The texture pack comes with its own custom version of Dolphin, or at least settings for one, so you could look into that if you really like, although emulating that would definitely have downsides compared to Dusk.

Dusk already punches up some visual effects, like better quality bloom. Will probably continue to improve over the next year or so as well, if you wanted to wait for an even better experience.

You can find the correct disc image on Minerva archive (its the successor to Myrient)

I found a new (to me) site looking for it called cdromance.org and it was really refreshing to not see 15 "click here to download" virus bait banners.

[-] SparroHawc@piefed.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

There's a good chance you have the wrong version of the disc. There were two versions in the USA; the second version patched out some glitches.

I have two completely different file types at very different sizes and they both run without it complaining somehow… the hashes do not at all match, but both dumps are from reputable sources? We’ll see how that goes!

Why is it always Twilight Princess that gets this treatment?

[-] TALL421@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

Because it's decomp is done?

[-] Iunnrais@piefed.social 9 points 2 weeks ago

It’s not? OoT has a nice pc port too.

Not to mention that Twilight Princess is a good game, and beloved by many.

Majora's Mask uses the same underlying port as OoT (I think; Ship of Harkinian for OoT and 2 ship 2 harkinian for MM) and is also really nice to play. Being able to use the D-pad for items is a great QoL improvement. Especially when climbing the stupid Stone Tower.

I had a short flight today, so I played this at the airport and on the plane.

The intro leading up to the first dungeon is so long.

I played this when I was in high school, so literally almost no memories of it. I’m looking forward to a second playthrough.

[-] Iunnrais@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, the intro is a bit long, no denying that. I personally find the build up worth it though in terms of narrative payoff. But I do always dread the slow start when I replay it. Fair.

If you dumped the disc with an Wii, maybe the mismatch is due to the console being moody with some storage medias.

A while back, I tried an USB stick on it that I would later learn was making several parts of the console mod to misbehave. But when I tried to dump I think it was The Last Story to it, it generated a working dump, even if mismatching the expected hash.

[-] monolalia@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I don’t recall where the dump is from. I have a Game Cube and a (German, PAL50/PAL60) Twilight Princess, but no matching monitor/TV. This firmware here looks like it should work with my SATA Blu Ray drive and enable ripping the disc, but I don’t know if I want to risk bricking the drive. The dump I have works with Dolphin, anyway…

So far my only complaint is setting the z button on steam deck as left stick click by default and leaving RB completely unused.
