To be fair with that one he didn't like it right off the bat, but he liked her so he kinda went along with it.
No one should choose their own names, it's like giving oneself a nickname.
Everyone should be able to choose their own names. Because parents can screw up massively in that regard.
But, we all did that.

Agreed, as I've oddly been assigned many throughout my life without intended influence. But what of one who never had a name in the beginning, but rather a simple designation? And the anxiety of thinking they'd accepted the wrong one, what then?
The same way everyone else usually gets their names, someone that cares for them gives them a name. In this case they can get to choose the person, but that's all.
The process with nicknames are similar but the reasons for the name of choice are completely different.
Then we already know the rightfully given name most used by those closest to him: The Doc.
